Here's a rarity: a GOOD movie of the week. This very likable made-for-TV cash-in on the road movie / good ole boy sweepstakes benefits from a personable cast, solid writing, and surprisingly complex characterizations. To its credit, it veers from the comic to the sentimental, and earns both our laughter and tears.

Pre-stardom Mare Winningham is a joy as the bumpkin drifter's new girlfriend who gets involved in the seriocomic stopover at the one-horse town of Weasel Creek. Also helping out this enjoyably twangy yarn is the strong supporting roles for Colleen Dewhurst (as the crusty mom who is always telling her white-trash daughter: "Laverne, get some clothes on") and Richard Farnsworth in a shocking turn as a seemingly gentle old man who suddenly performs a murder-suicide with his rifle. (While writing this, I am reminded how this grim moment foreshadows the actor taking his own life three years ago.)

I haven't seen this in about 20 years-- a local station used to show this on the late show. Since seeing a late night movie nowadays is a rare experience in itself, let alone seeing an old TV-movie; I can't imagine when or if it will appear again, but it is definitely worth your time. It is the perfect surprise of a flick to be found on VHS or DVD at Walmart in the "Under $10" rack.
