The Berlin Film Festival announced today (Monday) that it will present honorary Golden Bear awards for lifetime achievement to British actor Ian McKellen and Polish writer/director Andrzej Wajda next month. Wajda, who turns 80 on March 6, has been nominated six times for the festival's top Golden Bear award, but has never won. (He received a Silver Bear for lifetime contribution to cinema in 1996.) He won the 1981 Golden Palm award at the Cannes Film Festival for his Czlowiek z zelaza (Man of Iron) and received an honorary Oscar in 2000. McKellen, generally regarded as Britain's greatest contemporary Shakespearian actor, is perhaps best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
