There was never anyone like Jarman for capturing the mystery of the image, so who better to direct a play which is about nothing else? Prospero's last speech could be a summary of the function of cinema - all a magnificent, beautiful trick of the light. And the whole of this film is written in/by the light. The words hardly matter (with the exception of that last speech), except as signposts. Perhaps it sounds sacrilegious to propose a great adaptation of Shakespeare where the words hardly matter, but it isn't, and it shouldn't be, because this is cinema and the poetry should be visual. I'm sure WS would understand.

What an irreplaceable loss Jarman was.
