"I remember being very influenced by Taxi Driver, and also Tommy Lee Jones in Coal Miner's Daughter a little bit," Sam Rockwell told me Thursday from his Boston apartment where he'd wound up after spending a day -- as he described it in his laid-back tone -- "mellowing out." "I remember thinking about those two particular performances for some reason," he continued. "I think because every guy struggles with loneliness, and being an outsider, it's tough. It was a really nice part to play." He could've been talking about Moon, this year's stellar, one-man sci-fi show for which, if there's any justice, he should receive a Best Actor Oscar nomination. »

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader, the third in the epic series of films based on the bestselling books by C.S. Lewis, began principal photography on location in Queensland, Australia, on Monday, July 27. The production, a joint venture between Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Walden Media, continues the franchise which commenced with the 2005 release,The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and its 2008 follow-up, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, whose combined global box office gross tops $1.2 billion.

Producer Ned Tanen Dead At 77

Ned Tanen, who served as president of both Universal and Paramount studios, died Monday in Santa Monica at age 77, Daily Variety reported today (Tuesday). With Russ Regan, Tanen founded Uni Records in 1967, focusing initially on the psychedelic sounds of the mid-60s. After moving into film production, he brought to the screen such Universal films as Smokey and the Bandit, Coal Miner's Daughter and Melvin and Howard. As an independent producer (Chanel Productions), he turned out the brat-pack hits Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire. Moving to Paramount in 1984, he greenlit such films as Planes, Trains and Automobiles and The Untouchables. »
