A Conversation with Danielle Harris

17 October 2009 2:29 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Danielle Harris, star of four films in the Halloween franchise, as well as pictures like The Last Boyscout, City Slickers, Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead, and the television series Roseanne was kind enough to sit down with me at the 2009 Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida to talk about her career. The interview was filmed live, but due to surrounding noise I have transcribed the conversation below.

Ja/Fangoria: First of all, can I say how nervous I am that we are making a film with John Landis sitting right over there?

Danielle Harris: (laughs)

Ja: We're here at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida, and how has it been going for you so far?

Dh: It's been good! It's been really busy.

Ja: Have you met any creeps so far?

Dh: Not really at this show, only a handful. (laughs)

Ja: You actually lived here in Florida, »

Controversy Over Naked Shields Photo

30 September 2009 5:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Children's campaigners in the U.K. have blasted plans to display a naked photo of a ten-year-old Brooke Shields as part of an art exhibition.

A nude snap of The Blue Lagoon star posing in a bathtub when she was a child is set to go on show as part of the Pop Life: Art In A Material World exhibition at the Tate Modern in the U.K. capital.

The controversial photograph has been separated from the other exhibits and hangs in its own room behind a closed door, with a notice warning visitors they may find the work "challenging".

The move has been met with fury by children's campaigners, who have branded it a "magnet" for paedophiles.

Michele Elliott, founder of Kidscape, says, "Brooke Shields was 10 years old when this picture was taken. She could not have given informed consent to it being used. It must be bordering on child pornography. It is certainly not art.

"If you are using a picture of a naked child to bring people to your exhibition, then you are exploiting that child. It's as if they are using a 10-year-old girl for bait. I find it disturbing and they should be ashamed of themselves. And putting the picture in a room with a warning outside really is a magnet for paedophiles."

Officials at the Tate Modern have defended the inclusion of the photograph - but admit they consulted lawyers before deciding to display the provocative piece.

A spokesperson says, "As with any artwork that contains challenging imagery, Tate has sought legal advice and evaluated the situation. Tate has taken measures to inform visitors of the nature of the work, providing information outlining the intentions of the artist."

The original image was taken in 1975 by artist Gary Cross. In 1981, Shields lost a court battle to purchase back the negatives.

The exhibition opens on Thursday. »

Shields Making Movie Return In Furry Vengeance

9 July 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Model-turned-actress Brooke Shields is making a return to movie theatres - she's landed her first major film role in 10 years.

The Blue Lagoon star's acting career has been limited to TV roles in recent years, with appearances in Nip/Tuck, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Two and a Half Men, and the recently axed Lipstick Jungle.

But, fresh from her touching tribute to late pal Michael Jackson at his Los Angeles memorial on Tuesday, Shields has scored a part in comedy Furry Vengeance.

The movie, in which she'll play Brendan Fraser's wife, follows a real estate developer and his troubles with a family of raccoons, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Shields' last mainstream movie role was in 1999's Black and White. »

News Bites: Brooke Shields on the Big Screen & 'Motherhood'

9 July 2009 2:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It looks like Brooke Shields is making her way back to the big screen, and this time she won't be getting saucy in The Blue Lagoon. After a decade away, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Shields has signed onto the live-action comedy Furry Vengeance. Actually, considering the title, it's probably good to note that this is a family film. There's no word on what role she'll play in the Brendan Fraser flick, which follows a real estate developer who gets a hard time from a band of raccoons. One -- What's the obsession with coons lately? Davey Crockett on the brain? Two -- It might be the usual Fraser fair, but the cast does boast Ken Jeong, Samantha Bee, and Dick Van Dyke as well.

Meanwhile, in the shadow of Parenthood heading to the small screen, THR also posts that Freestyle Releasing has picked up Motherhood, and will release it this October. »

Shields Shared 'Asexual Relationship' With Jackson

7 July 2009 1:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Brooke Shields formed an instant bond with Michael Jackson after they met - but insists their relationship was purely platonic.

The actress was introduced to the singer when she was just 13 and the pair made headlines as they stepped out as a couple.

In a new candid interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Shields recalls that in the 1980s she was "the most celebrated virgin ever" while Jackson was trying to adjust to the scores of women who "wanted to throw themselves at (him) and feel like they were going to teach him".

But she insists she was able to befriend the superstar straight away because he didn't put any pressure on her to advance their relationship.

And the 44 year old maintains that as the years passed, "the more asexual he became to me."

She adds, "Nothing was jaded about him."

But The Blue Lagoon star admits Jackson did express a certain curiosity about her early romances.

She explains, "He was like a little kid who talked about the bases - what first base was, what second base was. It sounded very odd to the outside, I can imagine, but to the inside, to someone who's never really left his bubble, you can understand how he would be curious."

Shields, who will pay tribute to Jackson at Tuesday's Los Angeles memorial, has fond memories about her last meeting with Jackson, which was at Elizabeth Taylor's 1991 wedding to Larry Fortensky.

She says, "We snuck in and took pictures of ourselves next to her dress. We always seemed to revert to being little kids."

Jackson died on 25 June after suffering a cardiac arrest in his California home. »

Blue Lagoon Actor Swims Out Of Debt With New Career

22 January 2009 5:35 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Blue Lagoon actor Christopher Atkins' movie past is chasing him in his new career - he now builds lagoon-inspired pools.

The 47-year-old became an overnight success at age 19 on the 1980 film, co-starring Brooke Shields.

But his movie fortune came to ruin in 1986, when Atkins discovered his former business manager had embezzled money, leaving him drowning in debt.

He tells the National Enquirer, "I had $250 in the bank. I had to take a loan out on my house just to cover the bills and buy food for (my family) to eat...

"I know it sounds like a joke, but it's absolutely true. My partner and I design and build high-end swimming pools. In fact, we just finished a job creating a pool designed to look like a real lagoon." »

Fan Rant: Is Any Old-School Star Safe From Reality Television?

5 January 2009 11:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Perhaps all possibly iconic roles should come with a warning: If you get too popular, too much of a heartthrob or superstar, there's a good chance that the spotlight will fade and you'll have to make your "comeback" on a reality show. Oh, how the mighty can fall.

We've had everything from The Surreal Life to The Two Coreys, and now we're getting Confessions of a Teen Idol. Heard of it? The upcoming VH1 show has some completely unsurprising faces, including: Eric Nies (who is now a hippie-looking life coach!?), everyone's favorite No-Match-For-a-Cool-Rider Adrien Zmed, and Jamie Walters, who has morphed from Shout star to head-shorn, tat-covered musician. But the big surprise on the list, at least for me, Christopher Atkins -- also known as the man who led The Pirate Movie and showed off his stuff with Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon.Filed under: Casting, Celebrities and Controversy »
