Man vs Nature could only have risen in the '70s, the '60s were too flowery and the '80s too greedy, and Alligator is a fantastic full stop to a genre that was ace even when it was awful. Lewis Teague learnt his trade working for the legendary Roger Corman and the austerity is clearly evident, the story is lean, but pacey enough to sweep you from start to finish. Robert Forster is economy in motion, playing himself and not even trying to pretend otherwise, its easy to imagine a bigger ego making a complete mess of things. The genre clichés are firmly bolted in place: good people fall in love, bad people get whomped! and all's well that ends well, but you can almost feel Corman watching from the wings and that's the difference.
