Back Catalogue #4: Vci Entertainment

26 October 2009 4:34 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

One of the real joys of Back Catalogue is getting to sift through movies I actually want to watch instead of whatever happens across my desk. This look at the older titles available through Vci Entertainment offered a little bit of everything. Mario Bava, made for TV fare, cult classics, exploitation and even documentary. Needless to say this was quite a viewing party.

Kiss Of The Tarantula was a definite first into the DVD player for me as I loves me some campy spider action. The film follows the mold of other movies like Willard, and Stanley, leaving out the supernatural element. Poor misunderstood, constantly picked on Susan isn't able to control spiders, she just raises them in the family mortuary. And when the locals (and her lecherous uncle) get a little too aggressive poor Susan pops a few of her eight legged friends in for visit.

Murder By Decree Comes To DVD December 15th

22 September 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Lionsgate will re-release Bob Clark's Sherlock Holmes vs Jack The Ripper cult classic Murder By Decree on DVD December 15th, no doubt to conveniently coincide with Guy Ritchie's big budget Sherlock Holmes feature starring Robert Downey Jr. We say re-release because Anchor Bay Entertainment has had a DVD version of Murder By Decree in circulation since early 2003. Hailed as an "intelligent, gripping and totally irresistible" Sherlock Holmes mystery, Murder By Decree stars Emmy® winner Christopher Plummer, three-time Academy Award® nominee James Mason and Emmy® winner Donald Sutherland. The film follows renowned detective Sherlock Holmes on his quest to capture his deadliest adversary yet, Jack the Ripper. The DVD includes an audio commentary (also carted over from... »

New Sherlock Holmes Photos And Trailer Announcement

6 May 2009 6:07 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The best Sherlock Holmes movie ever made remains Murder By Decree which stars Christopher Plummer and James Mason as the famed duo in search of Jack the Ripper.  It's a fantastic and creepy mystery from the director of A Christmas Story and Porky's.  The Michael Caine/Ben Kingsley comedy Without A Clue is a close second, but there's a good chance that ranking may change this December when Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes hits theaters.  USA Today has posted an early look at the upcoming possible blockbuster including new photos, a screen description, and news about the film's first trailer... which is scheduled to premiere in front of Terminator Salvation on May 21st. Robert Downey Jr. stars as the master detective with Jude Law portraying his dapper sidekick, Dr. John Watson.  The film also stars Rachel McAdams as a wily lass and Mark Strong as the villain.  This adventure is seen by many as a re-imagining due »

Back Catalogue #1 - Synapse Films

29 April 2009 1:43 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Welcome to the first installment of a new column here at Fangoria.com, Back Catalogue. Sometimes the Catalogue will cover new releases of older films, and sometimes it will feature exactly what the title implies, back catalogue items. These will normally be from smaller specialty labels that have formed the backbone of the horror fans ability to build a truly representative collection of their favorite films. I'm proud to start this column back up after a two year hiatus and promise to work hard to recommend films that you're in danger of forgetting about, have maybe never heard of, or that might be ready to go out of print.

I'm also proud that the first edition of Catalogue is all about Synapse Films. Anybody who goes to conventions and has stopped by the Synapse table has not only seen first hand the amazing array of labor of love releases and Special Editions they produce, »
