Emmy Award-winning movie maverick Daniel Melnick has died after battling lung cancer. He was 77.

The former head of production at MGM and Columbia studios made his name by signing off on bold and often controversial films like Straw Dogs, Network and Making Love.

Paying tribute to the mogul, his protege Sherry Lansing tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "He was an extraordinary producer and an extraordinary executive. He always thought out of the box and was never afraid to take a risk."

Melnick was also the brains behind cult TV show Get Smart.

He won Emmys in the mid 1960s for John Gielgud's Shakespearean TV special Ages of Man and Death of a Salesman.

Sam Peckinpah’s violent and controversial Straw Dogs was the first film Melnick produced.

He also helped to develop classic movies like Midnight Express, Kramer Vs. Kramer, All That Jazz and The China Syndrome at Columbia.

Melnick also produced 1984’s Footloose and Steve Martin's revamp of the Cyrano De Bergerac tale, Roxanne. »

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed There are a few titles that may interest you that are releasing this week, but I guarantee there are some titles that will catch your eye in the new release date section at the end of this post as I spent all afternoon yesterday updating the DVD and Blu-ray new release titles. Hope you find something you like... Watchmen Due to its box-office letdown, fanboy defense mechanisms and the high regard held for its source material, like it or not, Watchmen is the release of the week, but it won't be the last time. I reviewed the Blu-ray director's cut, which you can read right here, and inside of it I was sure to remind you there will be yet another release of Watchmen this December. So, it's up to you. Do you double-dip or endure the wait? Midnight Express »

DVD Playhouse—July 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

April Showers, Midnight Express (1978)

April Showers

I've always been a little bit a lot perplexed by the famous shower scene in Alan Parker's Midnight Express (1978). I'm not exactly sure why it's in the movie. Midnight Express has, at its best, an expressive physicality and a gritty tactile quality. You often feel like you're right there in the grotty hellish Turkish prison, sweating and suffering along with Billy Hayes (Brad Davis). But the sexual vibes coming off of Midnight Express are at times unfathomable. Is it gay? Is it bi? Is it straight? Is it just horny? Or is its ambiguous eroticism simply a by-product of casting Brad Davis in the lead role?

As warm up to the famous shower scene we get a montage detailing the friendship of Billy and Erich (Norbert Weisser) a fellow prisoner. They've been in this hellhole for years. They do yoga together. They bathe each other. They even »

How Come There Are No Great Soccer Films?

26 March 2009 11:32 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If soccer movies were as exciting as sportscaster Andrés Cantor makes scoring in real-life soccer matches sound ("Goooooooooooooool!!!'), we wouldn't be asking this question. But even die-hard fans of both cinema and soccer must ask, Why have there been no great movies about the most popular sport in the world?

You might easily dismiss my thinking since I'm an American and I live in a city where (American) football is considered a religion, so why not listen to more informed opinions? Simon Clifford, team owner and manager, trained players for soccer film The Damned United, which opens in the UK tomorrow. He told Glenn Moore of The Independent UK: "If the football doesn't look right the whole film can fall flat."

Director Alan Parker (Midnight Express, Fame, Angela's Ashes) observed: "It's an impossibly difficult sport to replicate because football is seen primarily in wide-shot. The excitement unfolds seeing at »

7 January 2009 9:51 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The time has come for another round-up, a collection of DVD and Blu-Ray titles that may have missed the front page in the Best Buy circular but that might be worth your attention. The DVD Round-Up is back (check out the first edition here and a few Blu-Ray Round-Ups here and here) with drama, comedy, TV, action, and even Hitler.

Nicolas Cage plays a killer in “Bangkok Dangerous,” Derek Luke a football player in “Friday Night Lights,” Aaron Eckhart a suburbanite in “Towelhead,” and Carmen Electra essentially herself in “Disaster Movie”. There’s something for everyone in the DVD Round-Up.

All of these titles were released on January 6th, 2009, unless otherwise noted.

Bangkok Dangerous

“The Hitman Has Become the Target.” Nicolas Cage stars in the remake of The Pang Brothers’ “Bangkok Dangerous,” a messy action film about Joe, a hired assassin caught in the middle of a hitman’s nightmare. »
