Top Ten Overrated Films

3 December 2009 9:58 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Overrated films are an interesting breed. They are essentially the type that everybody goes crazy for until consideration, time, thought and retrospect force us to reassess the situation. They are, by and large, the product of Hollywood: though by no means exclusive. However, Hollywood films are the most hyped; the most seen; the most heard. They are garnered with awards and flattery and the cycle begins again. Is it genius of deception or commerce?

Orson WellesCitizen Kane is often labelled as “the greatest film ever made”. It will not appear in this list. It is not an overrated film. Even now, in the sixty-plus years since its release, Welles’ masterpiece remains inimitable. Searching for something to dislike in it is pointless. Yes, critics go ga-ga for Orson, and so they should. He was a true maverick.

Forgotten Films: A Boy and His Dog

26 November 2009 12:09 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Forgotten Films [1] is a semi-regular feature on Film Junk where we explore interesting movies that have fallen off the radar or slipped through the cracks over the years. With all the post-apocalyptic movies that have been coming out lately, I thought it would be a good time to look back at one of the lesser known classics of the genre, L.Q. Jones' A Boy and His Dog. Based on the novella by Harlan Ellison, the movie takes place in the year 2024, after not one but two additional world wars have been initiated by humanity -- the latter of which leaves the Earth devastated by nuclear missiles. As a result, a large part of the movie presents a familiar desert wasteland setting that has come to be associated with post-apocalyptic tales over the years. A young, pre-Miami Vice Don Johnson stars as Vic, an 18-year-old nomad who lost his »

Swamp Thing actor dies as Warner Bros plans new 3D remake

28 September 2009 4:04 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The Actor who played the DC Comics character Swamp Thing in two films and a television series has died at the age of 72.

Dick Durock, a 6ft 5ins former Marine, passed away at his home in Oak Park, California, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, according to his official website.

Durock wore a latex bodysuit and make-up to play the monster in 1982's Swamp Thing directed by Wes Craven; its 1989 sequel The Return of Swamp Thing; and a subsequent Swamp Thing series that ran for 71 episodes from 1990 to 1993.

The actor appeared in dozens of other movies and TV series including the shows Star Trek, Knight Rider, The A-Team, Battlestar Galactica and The Incredible Hulk.

Fans had been hoping Durock would have a cameo role in the new 3D remake of Swamp Thing or at least be able to see his classic creation come to life on the big screen again. »

Rip Dick Durock

25 September 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Without a doubt the hardest part of our job reporting on the latest horror news is when one of our own is taken from us. We're very sad to inform you that Dick Durock, best known for his role as the "Swamp Thing", passed away last week at his home in Oak Park, California, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Durock, 72, was the subject of a fond tribute from Erin Blasko of the South Bend Tribune. Excerpts follow:

Born in South Bend in the late 1930s, Richard "Dick" Durock survived an early family tragedy to become a minor Hollywood player and fanboy idol for his role as Swamp Thing in the two feature films and television series of the same name.

Despite his success, he remained a humble Midwesterner at heart.

"He didn't get a big head. He was down-to-earth, very natural," Frank Varrichione, Durock's brother-in-law, said.

R.I.P. Dick "Swamp Thing" Durock

25 September 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

We're terribly saddened to learn of the passing of actor/stuntman Dick Durock, most recognized by genre fans for his portrayal of Swamp Thing . Durock got his start making appearances in dozens of TV shows such as Battlestar Galactica , The A-Team , Santa Barbara , Knight Rider , Airwolf and many more. Personally, this writer remembers him scaring the hell out of me as the monster in the 1981 two part episode "Frye's Creature" of The Incredible Hulk . The actor went on to play the DC comics character Swamp Thing in Wes Craven's film, again in it's sequel The Return Of Swamp Thing and also for the Swamp Thing television series, which ran for 71 episodes. He was 72 years old. »

Swamp Thing Actor Dick Durock Dies

25 September 2009 5:25 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Hollywood actor and stuntman Dick Durock, most famous for portraying the DC Comics anti-hero Swamp Thing in the original 1982 Wes Craven film, passed away recently after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Durock was 72.

Durock was a television staple for years before donning the green latex suit that made him famous, appearing on The Little House on the Prairie, Quincy M.E., The Incredible Hulk, The Rockford Files, and many other shows. While critically panned, Swamp Thing had a strong cult following and Durock went on to reprise the role of Dr. Alec Holland's mutated alter-ego in The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) and in 71 episodes of the Swamp Thing TV series that ran on the USA Network.

In one of Durock's final interviews, he confessed that he was not familiar with the character before getting the part.

You know, honestly, I wasn't. I grew up in the era with Superman, »

Ferrigno To Dance With The Stars

The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno is set to show off his fancy footwork as a contestant on the new season of U.S. reality show Dancing With The Stars.

The bodybuilder-turned-actor, who recently hit the headlines when it was revealed he was Michael Jackson's personal trainer up to the King of Pop's death in June, originally auditioned for the show in 2007, according to Life & Style magazine.

He says, "I had a good meeting with the producers for Dancing With the Stars, it was really positive, and they loved the idea of having me on the show.

"I’ve never done that type of dancing before, so I know that I’ll have to train hard. I’m a glutton for punishment, so I’ll give it my best shot." »

Interview: Bob Hastings

21 July 2009 8:36 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Actor Bob Hastings is a television veteran. Yet, you are more likely to know his voice than his face. He has worked in many genres and featured in several innovative radio and television science fiction shows. His career took in the earliest days of TV entertainment and playing a regular character in acclaimed superhero cartoons from the 1990s. But it all began with a song.

"I think it was about 1935 or the beginning of 1936," Hastings said. "A teacher heard me sing in school at an assembly and he thought I sang well enough that I should be on radio. So I started singing radio shows and from there... There was a newspaper called 'The Daily Mirror' and they had a children's show on Wmca in New York and I sang on that...for maybe a couple of years. Then I went over to NBC and that was before the networks »

Fox's Werewolf Series Finally Comes To DVD September 1st!

8 May 2009 6:56 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Oh hells yes! One of my all time favorite TV shows was the old Fox series simply titled Werewolf which began airing on that network back in 1987. For years, only bootleg versions have been available via the convention circuit. Now, TV Shows on DVD announces that Shout! Factory (who also brought us Swamp Thing: The Series on DVD) will be putting out the entire series on DVD on September 1st!

The show followed Eric Cord (John J. York), a man recently infected with the curse of the werewolf on the run from bounty hunter Alamo Joe Rogan (Lance LeGault) and in search of Skorzeny (Chuck Conners in one of his final TV roles), the head werewolf Eric is convinced turned him. Hey, Paulington: The Black List, Reboots, and Cineplex Sex!

Hey, Paulington! Is a new Cinephile advice column that looks at life, love, and the movies. Anyone can send in a question, and Paulington will answer it. Sure, it's a really cryptic, cliched concept that has been around since the dawn of time. But we're going to spice it up a little bit. Topics can range from anything: Sex, violence, haints and taints, your favorite movie! Paulington doesn't care. He's basically doing it for a paycheck. He's not really an expert on anything. But he sure does know a lot about movies and human nature. You can send your questions to (as in, click on the giant red letters and you will automatically be sent to his email):

Hey, Paulington!

And he will be sure to answer all of them in a very timely manner. Here are this week's letters. Enjoy!
