Top Ten Greatest Movie Punches

1 June 2009 12:46 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Top 10 Greatest Movie Punches Although I am sure most of you have already seen the trailer for this weekend's release of The Hangover, I have included it to the right just in case as it served as the inspiration for this top ten list thanks to the right hook Mike Tyson delivers to Zach Galifianakis laying him out for a ten count. The clip got me to thinking about the best punches I have seen landed in movies and those that have stuck with me. Since I hadn't seen The Hangover prior to posting this list I have no idea if Tyson's blow would have made it, but I think I have gathered a collection of ten knockdowns worthy of consideration. Just to clarify, this is a list of my personal favorite single punches thrown in movies. One punch and done. While other punches may surround the ones I »

Scenes We Love: Slap Shot

9 February 2009 4:33 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When an ill-advised remake of a film is just around the corner, it's always nice to go back to the original and revel in what makes it so damn good. Plus, it's Monday, and you need a little Nsfw bloodletting. So, here is the on-ice debut of the Hanson Bros in Slap Shot. It's pretty self-explanatory, though not the best quality.

What I particularly love about this film is that everyone did their own skating (with the Hanson Bros going on to careers in the NHL and Whl). Even Paul Newman did his own skating, so that there's none of those cheesy cutaway shots that focus on feet, then on an actor's upper body, with nary the two meeting. (Something that's all over the wretched sequels -- and which will be all over a remake.) According to IMDb, the skating requirement actually kept another actor out of the film -- »

Dean Parisot (Fun with Dick and Jane, Galaxy Quest) will be directing Universal's upcoming Slap Shot remake. According to Variety, this redo of the classic 1977 sports comedy will be adapted by scribe Peter Steinfeld (21) from Nancy Dowd's original work with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) producing. Slap Shot hopes to enjoy the success of another sports redo, The Longest Yard, which earned $158 million to become the second highest earning football movie ever. »

Slap Shot Remake Gets Director

3 February 2009 11:00 PM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Universal’s remake of the 1977 comedy classic Slap Shot is officially moving forward because it now has a director onboard. Dean Parisot, known for directing films such as the Jim Carrey comedy Fun with Dick and Jane, Home Fries, which starred Luke Wilson and Drew Barrymore, and sci-fi parody GalaxyQuest, will be the man in charge of the picture. The original starred Paul Newman as the fading player/coach of a minor league hockey team who, desperate to keep the team going, comes up with the idea to turn his team into a group of fighting hooligans. The Charlestown Chiefs put the Hanson brothers, played by David Hanson, Steve Carlson and Jeff Carlson, [...] »

'Slap Shot' Remake Gets a Director, Scorn

3 February 2009 6:50 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Because I am not against the practice of remakes in theory, I can't demand that they stop remaking Slap Shot before they even begin. But I still hate to see it happen.

The script for the remake of one of the all-timers is being crafted by Peter Steinfeld (21), and now they've hired director Dean Parisot, who is probably not a fair approximation of George Roy Hill.

Parisot's last movie was also a remake - Fun with Dick and Jane - and because Variety mentions the nostlagia craze that accompanied The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler, I'm even less inclined to be excited about this. »

Fan Rant: For The Love of the Game -- Leave 'Slap Shot' Alone!

3 February 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We say it all the time -- "That's a film that should never be remade!" 95% of the time, its true. The latest to go through the remake treatment is the hockey classic Slap Shot -- and it's apparently been buzzed and bitched about since last summer, when Peter Steinfeld took the writing job. But now Variety announces that Dean Parisot will be directing, which means that it will take an act of God or Gordie Howe to stop this atrocity from happening.

First, it ought to be illegal to remake anything that starred Paul Newman. It's as simple as that. He's off limits from Fort Apache the Bronx to The Sting, and everything in between. Secondly, Slap Shot is just one of those perfect pieces of Americana -- one of those grungy comedies that could only be made in the 1970s. It's old time hockey as it doesn't exist anymore »

Dean Parisot Hits the Remake of Slap Shot -- Start your nightmare casting of the Hanson Brothers

3 February 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Director Dean Parisot ("Fun with Dick and Jane") will be directing a remake of the cult classic 1977 film "Slap Shot" for Universal with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall producing. Peter Steinfeld ("21") will write the screenplay. In case you're wondering, that sound you hear are the cries of every fan of the original movie. The original (and you should just go and rent it if you haven't seen it already) starred Paul Newman as the fading player/coach of a minor league hockey team. Trying to hype the Charlestown Chiefs for a possible move South, the coach ramps up interest by turning his team into a group of brawling thugs. It's entertaining. Variety, always keeping focus on what's important, notes that "nostalgic resistance" didn't hurt the box office returns of the remake for "The Longest Yard". Never mind that the remake isn't ... »

Slap Shot remake gets a director

2 February 2009 11:48 PM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Universal has signed director Dean Parisot to remake cult 1977 hockey comedy Slap Shot. 21’s Peter Steinfeld caused a ruckus last year when he announced he had nabbed the job of writing the script, and there have been plenty of calls for the remake to be cancelled. But that’s never stopped Hollywood before and the studio is ploughing onwards. The original featured Paul Newman as the player/coach of minor league hockey team the Charlestown Chiefs.   Steinfeld has said he sees an opportunity to hype the team up...
