A "musical film noir" that is funny and sad, and oddly timeless, 5 May 2004
Author: machineel

This film won the BEST FILM award at the 1978 Ann Arbor Film Festival. Its original title was "SHOWBOAT 1988" in reference to the famous musical previously filmed three times (in 1929, 1936 and 1951). The title was changed because of a legal dispute with MGM and a protested use of the title. The plot concerns a film-maker who needs to use a $10,000 grant for a remake of Showboat, the ironic twist is that all the actors who audition sing songs and dance routines from every musical EXCEPT the one he is remaking.

One of the actors is the sensationally attractive Bobby Ross credited here as "Juan Demone". Bobby Ross was credited as Juan Damone in SEX DEMON, made in 1975 and reviewed in VARIETY magazine.

Bobby's last known commercial film was a small role in "And Baby Makes Six" filmed by Twentieth Century Fox featuring the late Colleen Dewhurst. He was represented by the Ann Demeter Talent Agent in San Francisco and is still an active member of A.G.V.A.

In 1988, Bobby's scene is funny and charming because while singing Together Wherever We Go (from GYPSY) the accompanist slyly changes from the key of C used in rehearsal to the higher key of F for the camera. Bobby's voice goes thin in the high notes and he calmly stops in the middle of the scene and admonishes the pianist with a gentle scolding, "Oh, that's much too high!" He smiles and stares at the pianist who returns to the correct key and finishes the song. This scene appeared in the compilation film for promotions to distributors. This film shows up in both its original release version and in a "censored" version that was shown on British television.
