In recent years, Jean-Jacques Annaud has acquired a reputation as a great stylist, particularly efficient in working outdoors, but you don't see any of that in "Black and White in Color," his first and perhaps most critically praised movie. This black comedy is neither funny nor interesting. The film takes place in a French colony in Africa during World War I. The colonists have led a rather lazy life in harmony with the natives and their German neighbors. When the dimwitted French population discovers that France is at war with Germany, they decide to attack the peaceful and lighthearted Germans. It is silly, talky and a bit hysterical. The characters are very annoying too. I think American films like "The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming" and "Catch-22" cover similar ground at a higher artistic level. I was not amused. It did manage to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (?).
