CinemaSpy's Picks for the Twelve Most Entertaining Films of 2009

30 December 2009 9:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

As we say good-bye to 2009, we reflect back on a year of space opera spectacles, animated allegories and protracted period pieces. The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds and Up in the Air were favorites among critics in 2009, though one of those films actually didn't make our list of the twelve most entertaining films of 2009. We'll let you read on to figure out which one was omitted—you can feel free to chastise us in the Comments section below if you think we were unfair for leaving it out.

How do we interpret "entertaining," you ask? Not necessarily the best, or most influential…or most "important"…but what we considered to be the dozen most enjoyable and/or absorbing films of 2009—broadly defined, films that pulled you into the story for one reason or another, and weren't forgotten 10 minutes after leaving the theater. Films that elicited an emotional reaction, not through manipulation, »

Top 10 conspiracy films of the 70s

3 December 2009 5:19 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Richard Kelly’s The Box opens today in the UK, you can read my review here, and to celebrate the 70s paranoia vibe we’re posting this look back at some of the greatest conspiracy/paranoia thrillers of that decade. There are some great films here, and The Box does its best to emulate this, so you might want to look into some of these when you’re done with Kelly’s latest.

Klute 1971

Strongly following the crime / investigation genre, this film tells the story of a conspiracy theory that may be a little more personal, a little more close to home. Realistic and gritty (it centres on a prostitute); it promises the keep fans of 70’s films on their edge of their seat. ‘Don’t be afraid…’

When laboratory engineer Tom Gruneman (Robert Mili) disappears, the only clue available to detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) is an obscene letter »

Pierre Morel to direct 'Signals' thriller

5 November 2009 5:59 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Pierre Morel has been inking quite a few deals ever since his fast-paced thriller "Taken" turned into a box office hit, and one of his upcoming projects is a thriller titled "Signals" for Media Rights Capital.

Plot details are stirctly kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter says the film should take on the tone of a 1970s-era paranoid thriller like "Three Days of the Condor."

Richard Potter and Matthew Stravitz penned the script, and Mrc is convinced Morel is the perfect man for the job. Morel's next film, "From Paris with Love," will open Feb. 5, 2010.

Morel is also developing thrillers "Pursuit," "Hunter-Killer" and an untitled film. I really enjoyed his "Taken," even though the film was certainly no masterpiece. It sure was entertaining to watch though. »

'Taken' Director Attached to Paranoid Thriller 'Signals'

5 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There are two names you probably need to get to know in this article if you're not familiar with them already. The first is Pierre Morel, director of Taken and the upcoming From Paris With Love, which looks not nearly as good. Still, he's in demand these days and has another blood-pumping thriller called Pursuit in the works over at Universal.

The second name to file away for later is Media Rights Capital. It's a company that bankrolls movies at TV shows. This year, it's had Bruno, Shorts, The Invention of Lying, and this weekend's The Box. Bruno is probably the only real hit among that group, but Mrc got in the Matt Damon business a few months ago and is producing The Adjustment Bureau for next year, plus 2011's Devil, spearheaded by Night Shyamalan.

Take Morel and Media Rights Capital and throw 'em together and what do you get? »

Taken Director Sticking With Gritty Thrillers

5 November 2009 2:43 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It will have been nearly a year since Taken became a surprise hit by the time director Pierre Morel's next film, From Paris With Love finally hits theaters. Not that that's an especially long time to wait, but isn't a year without Morel too long? Anyway, he'll at least be keeping busy for the foreseeable future and keeping us entertained. For his next project he's decided on Signals, which is described in THR as in "the tone of a 1970s-era paranoid thriller like Three Days of the Condor." Media Rights Capital picked up the script last April and is fast-tracking the film; their president said in THR, "Pierre Morel is one of the most exciting filmmakers to emerge in years. Audiences have come to expect edge-of-their-seat action from him, and we are confident this next film will deliver just that." If you just can't wait until February, now would »

'Taken' Director Pierre Morel Will Give Us the Right 'Signals'

5 November 2009 10:16 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

While Pierre Morel's badass action thriller Taken was released internationally almost a year before it hit the Us, it didn't hurt it's eventual surprising box office victory and worldwide gross of  $226 million. Now that Morel has given Liam Neeson amazing clout in the action arena (his next film being another action heavy story Unknown White Male), THR reports that the director has found his next project in Signals, an original thriller screenplay written by Richard Potter and Matthew Stravitz. While the story is being kept under wraps, it is said to be in the same vein as 1970's-era paranoid thriller Three Days of the Condor. While I'm frustrated with projects that don't reveal any plot information whatsoever, it's good to hear that the screenplay is at least an original one and not another adaptation (since we see those all too often). While Taken's formula was simplistic, Morel knew »

Pierre Morel is Getting Signals

5 November 2009 4:49 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

French director Pierre Morel is getting to be quite the prolific director.  He had a huge hit earlier this year with Taken, and his upcoming actioner From Paris With Love is set to bow in February.  We reported earlier this year in April that he had already signed on to film extreme car chases throughout Tokyo in Tokyo Underworld, and now, it seems, the director has signed on to helm the thriller Signals for Media Rights Capital.  This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter.

The general plot outline for Signals, written by Richard Potter and Matthew Stravitz, is being kept under wraps, but it is being billed as a contemporary companion to the paranoia thrillers of the ’70s like Three Days Of The Condor.

Says Tory Metzger, Mrc Films president, about Morel stepping in to direct the film:

Pierre Morel is one of the most exciting filmmakers to emerge in years. »

Taken Director Pierre Morel Signs on for Paranoia Thriller, Signals

4 November 2009 11:27 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I've been a fan of Pierre Morrel ever since his French parkour action film District B13 floored me back in 2005. The film was certainly imperfect, but looking at it purely as an action film you could tell that Morrel was someone to watch out for in the future. Several years later, he reminded us that Liam Neeson can still kick ass in Taken, and he's currently putting the finishing touches on his latest, From Paris with Love. We've also previously reported on two other projects he's working on.  Now he's signed on for another feature, a paranoia thriller entitled Signals. The storyline is apparently a secret, but it's expected to take on the tone of conspiracy thrillers like Three Days of the Condor. I'll be honest and say that I don't even care what this film is about, I'm going to see it simply because of Morel's involvement. I'm hoping »

Pierre Morel To Direct Signals

4 November 2009 11:16 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Pierre Morel, director of the wonderful guilty pleasure that is Taken, has signed on to direct Signals, a thriller that’s said to be in the same vein as Three Days Of The Condor. It won’t be the Frenchman’s follow-up to the hugely enjoyable Liam Neeson action thriller, which grossed $224 million globally. That’s From Paris With Love, an actioner starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and John Travolta, which hits early next year.Since Taken took over the world, though, Morel has attached himself to a Tokyo-set thriller for Paramount, and Universal’s Pursuit. Whether Signals has jumped ahead in the queue remains unclear at this time. But the dude clearly has a thing for one-word titles.Richard Potter and Matthew Stravitz wrote the screenplay for Signals, the story of which remains under wraps for now. Media Rights Capital is stumping up the cash for the flick.  »

‘Taken’ Director ‘Signals’ For ‘More’ ‘Action’

4 November 2009 11:00 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I don't know if Richard Potter is a good writer, but I like his movies. The Executive in Charge of Production for flicks as diverse as Nightwatch, Teaching Mrs. Tingle and Scream has sold a few scripts lately, and alongside writing partner Matthew Stravitz has locked down a serious directing talent in Pierre Morel for their next film - Signals. The Taken director will be tackling what The Hollywood Reporter is Hollywood reporting as a tense thriller. They even reference absolutely brilliant film Three Days of the Condor in describing the tone. Media Rights Capital has greenlit it, slapped it on its bottom, and sent it out onto the fast track to play with the other kids. I know what you're all thinking. You're thinking that with this, Morel will continue down the same thriller path and possibly make his signature with taught action. You're welcome for overusing the word 'signals' as a pun in the title »

Pierre Morel is Taken with Signals

4 November 2009 9:15 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Get it? Because Pierre Morel was the director on the surprise hit “Taken”? Yeah, sorry, had to do it. Anyways. French director Pierre Morel, a wanted man nowadays thanks to the runaway success of the Liam Neeson revenge picture, has signed on to direct the spy thriller “Signals”. This, after he’s signed on to direct the actioner “Pursuit” for Universal, and has the Luc Besson-produced film “From Paris with Love” scheduled out in 2010. Based on an original screenplay by Richard Potter and Matthew Stravitz, “Signals” is expected to be along the lines of the 1970s paranoid thriller “Three Days of the Condor” (below), though the film’s exact plot remains a secret. Why, I haven’t a clue, but I guess keeping something a secret in Hollywood is like being the hot girl who refuses to date anyone, despite clearly dressing up to be noticed. Everyone’s all »

DVD Playhouse—May 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard HawksEl Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets. »
