"Black Moon" is a surreal, bizarre post-apocalyptic fantasy, not the kind of movie you expect to see from French director Louis Malle. It's a sort of 'Alice in Wonderland' with very weird sensibilities. Honestly, I didn't understand what was the point of the film. It's allegoric to a fault. Once the premise is established, the story hardly moves. The main character is very passive too. However, the film is filled with many strange scenes that provoke both puzzlement and disgust. It's like lite Luis Bunuel, if you know what I mean. It was photographed by the great Sven Nykvist, so I don't have to tell you that the film looks great. It does have this hypnotic quality that forces you to keep watching even though not much happens. Very odd indeed.
