New Row Over Disney's Plans For Asian Theme Park

14 July 1999 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Walt Disney Co. may be exempt from conducting a costly environmental study showing how its planned theme park in Hong Kong would affect the surrounding area, the South China Morning Post reported Tuesday. The newspaper said that instead, the local environmental protection agency could use an overall feasibility study currently underway by the Civil Engineering Department on how the proposed area could be used as a tourism site. Responding to the newspaper article, the Hong Kong government released a statement late Tuesday saying that it has not received any application from Disney for an environmental-impact study exemption nor has any exemption been granted. "Any statement by any party to the contrary is simply false, " the government statement said. NOTE: In Tuesday's Studio Briefing we noted that the 1975 film Death Race 2000 (1975) marked the screen debut of Sylvester Stallone. Our source for this story was the Popcorn Internet site operated by Britain's Carlton Communications. While the film may have introduced British audiences to Stallone, his Lords of Flatbush, The (1974) had been released in the U.S. the previous year. The same Popcorn article also identified the director of the upcoming Death Race 2000 (1975) 3000 as Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of Boogie Nights (1997). In fact, the director attached to the new film is another Paul Anderson, the director of Mortal Kombat (1995) and Event Horizon (1997)."
