Walk This Way: Nine-Disc Mel Brooks Blu-ray Set!

27 October 2009 4:48 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you're a fan of the irreplaceable and wonderful Mel Brooks, chances are you've already got The Mel Brooks Collection -- a DVD box jam-packed with most of the directors classic films. I already double-dipped to get them all in one spot, in space-saving super-slim cases, but now there's a collection worthy of a double or triple dip. And -- darn you all! -- yet another reason to get a Blu-ray player.

As DVD Snapshot shares, there's a new The Mel Brooks Collection on the way, and this time in glorious Blu-ray. But it's not just the old collection in high definition. It's the same roster +1 -- the film that was surprisingly lacking from the first release -- Spaceballs. That means, vacuum cleaner intergalactic hijinx along with Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety, History of the World Part I, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Silent Movie, To Be or Not to Be, »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #12

11 October 2009 1:08 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Okay, so I didn't watch only these two movies, but I have a few movies I am saving for actual reviews including the new Natural Born Killers Blu-ray and Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding which hits Criterion Blu-ray on October 20. While Monsoon Wedding will be a traditional review, I hope to encourage some conversation when I post my commentary on Natural Born Killers.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...

The Thaw (2009) Quick Thoughts: I already mentioned the Ghost House Collection this was a part of in my DVD/Blu-ray round-up last tuesday and Sara reviewed all four films from the collection last week. I finally got »

Classic Cameos: Count Basie, 'Blazing Saddles'

8 October 2009 11:45 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Jazz fans may appreciate Count Basie more than the rest of us, but the jazz pianist's cameo in Blazing Saddles is pretty funny even if you don't know much about him. It's all part of the 1974 Mel Brooks comedy's shtick that plays with conventional aspects of Hollywood films, culminating in the sidesplitting climactic sequence that blends movie sets, pie fights and Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

The Count Basie cameo occurs fairly early in Blazing Saddles. Bart (Cleavon Little) is headed to the Old West town of Rock Ridge as the new sheriff, dressed to the nines. Count Basie's signature jazz number, "April in Paris," plays in the background, highlighting Bart's urbane demeanor. And as Bart rides across the prairie, he encounters ... Count Basie and his orchestra, performing "April in Paris" right there on the frontier. It's one of the more subtle laughs in the film, but it never fails to amuse me, »

There's No Place Like Blu-Ray For 'Wizard Of Oz,' In The DVD Report For Tuesday, September 29

29 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Rare is the occasion where the week biggest release isn't a new blockbuster but rather a septuagenarian, but that's the case this time as a young girl from Kanas eclipses anything New Hollywood has to throw at us. This is your DVD Report for Tuesday, September 29, 2009.

Since the advent of Blu-ray, studios have casually mined their catalogues for suitable re-releases, and while the results have often been notable, they're usually nothing to stop the presses over. But every once in a while, that little extra effort is made that blows something out of the water and we get something like MGM's timeless "The Wizard of Oz," which breezes into its 70th birthday with one of the best Blu-ray collections of all time.

Presented in a large hardbound rectangular case, the 70th Anniversary Edition of "Oz" comes as a three-disc Blu-ray set featuring a whopping 20+ hours of bonus content, and is »

Five Flicks For Ringing In The Jewish New Year During Your Rosh Hashana Celebrations

18 September 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

This weekend, my people will gather will their families to celebrate the high holy holiday of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. Following the weekend festivities, Jews enter into a week of repentence, concluding with a day of fasting on Yom Kippur.

Technically, you're not supposed to be watching TV during Rosh Hashana, a certified "day of rest." I was raised in a reformed household though, so we play by a looser set of rules than more observant practitioners. Togetherness in my own family is usually punctuated by a movie or two. And since the Coen brothers' intensely Jewish "A Serious Man" doesn't hit theaters for a few more weeks, we've got to make do with what's watchable at home. Here are a few suggestions to bring along for your own gatherings...

2,000+ Words for the 2,000 Year Old Man: Mel Brooks Is Saluted by the Academy

25 July 2009 3:13 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

In early 1978, a child wandered into a now-razed mall cinema somewhere in the Midwest, ponied up $3.50 at the box office, and discovered that he had arrived early for his intended screening of Mel Brooks' consciousness-altering Hitchcock spoof, High Anxiety. Naturally, the child peeked at the tail end of the previous screening -- and felt a keen sense of spiritual expansion as a subtle crane shot aiming for the actors suddenly smashes, very awkwardly for all concerned, through a window! The child was me, and my perception of cinema was irrevocably altered. I loved every frame of the next screening, and -- catching up to the rest of the world who had caught on with Mel's astounding 1974 double-play of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein -- I became aware of a genius. My angle on Oscar. (photo: Gregory Weinkauf) That genius --... »

Top Ten Movies Midway Through 2009

8 July 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Top Ten Movies Midway Through 2009 Last year I did a mid-way top ten and only two of the films on that list (Wall-e and In Bruges) made my year end top ten. How many of this year's mid-way ten will make it? Judging by tomorrow's list of the 20 films I am anticipating over the next six months I wouldn't be surprised if the list changes drastically, but that is then... this is now. Photo: 20th Century Fox / Focus Features / Sony Classics / Summit Entertainment / Miramax Before we get to the list of ten I have a few that just missed the cut starting with Adventureland, which is actually my #11 selection and the first one to miss the top ten. As a matter of fact it is almost interchangeable with my #10 selection. But over the years I have grown to hate the idea of a tie in these kind of lists so »

[DVD Review] Spaceballs

2 July 2009 2:15 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

If you ask someone what their favorite Sci-fi spoof movie is, chances are Spaceballs will be mentioned. It’s the as-of-yet unmatched parody of Star Wars (and Star Trek, etc.) that just can’t seem to be replaced. It’s not even Mel Brooks’s best work, but it has a stranglehold on the genre. Brooks has a comic sensibility that many filmmakers can only dream of: the timing is perfect, the casting is always top-notch and the scripts have that necessary balance of self-importance and ridiculous notion to keep the entire scramble of a genre in one piece. Unfortunately, Spaceballs seems to grow dimmer as opposed to brighter as time marches on – but that has a lot to do with Mel’s self-professed, basic principle of parody: you can’t parody what you don’t love. Alas, the world has fallen out of love with Star Wars and Spaceballs feels it. »

Vanishing Point

1 July 2009 2:34 AM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

In case your wondering I'm talking about the 1971 classic and Viggo Mortensen made for TV re-make which I have not seen and pretty much have no interest in seeing either. Having just watched Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (A film which I like), it was time to throw on Vanishing Point (A film I love). Vanishing Point is another film with a simple premise, but one which is given a near perfect execution. Barry Newman (City on Fire, The Limey) stars as "Kowalski" (No first name is ever used). Kowalski is a man who has had a varied career from military service in Vietnam, a cop, a speedway motorcycle rider, a Nascar driver and now he delivers cars across the states.

Arriving in Denver with a car to drop off "Kowalski" decides against the advice of the guy at the depot to pick up another car and drive right back to San Francisco. »

Birthday Bash: Impossible Missions, Punch-Outs And Red Carpet Antics Are Causes For Celebration

29 June 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Just as everyone has an opinion, a favorite meal and a nose — albeit a fake one at times — so too does everyone have a birthday. Even celebrities. Here at Birthday Bash, it’s my mission to salute the fine actors, filmmakers and other Hollywood heroes that are celebrating their special day this week. After all, it’s cheaper than mailing a cake.

This week is jam-packed with birthday celebrations — so many, in fact, that I just couldn’t include them all. Still, there are some personalities who I found impossible to ignore…

Gary Busey (June 29): The current generation of moviegoers might only know Gary Busey for bear-hugging and smooching Jennifer Garner on the 2008 Academy Awards red carpet, or perhaps for his stint on “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.” But there’s a plethora of Busey performances that are truly must-see fare, such as his turns as Mr. Joshua in “Lethal Weapon, »

Top Ten Greatest Movie Punches

Top 10 Greatest Movie Punches Although I am sure most of you have already seen the trailer for this weekend's release of The Hangover, I have included it to the right just in case as it served as the inspiration for this top ten list thanks to the right hook Mike Tyson delivers to Zach Galifianakis laying him out for a ten count. The clip got me to thinking about the best punches I have seen landed in movies and those that have stuck with me. Since I hadn't seen The Hangover prior to posting this list I have no idea if Tyson's blow would have made it, but I think I have gathered a collection of ten knockdowns worthy of consideration. Just to clarify, this is a list of my personal favorite single punches thrown in movies. One punch and done. While other punches may surround the ones I »

Dom DeLuise, the iconic character actor, died this week at the age of 75.  Whilst perusing his many obituaries, I was struck by Reuters opening paragraph:  "Dom DeLuise, the U.S. comic actor who gained fame on television and in movies such as "Blazing Saddles" and "Smokey and the Bandit II," has died..."  The first is a comic classic, but the latter? DeLuise was never an A-Lister, but the man was in four Mel Brooks comedies including the revered "History of the World, part 1."  He was also in both "The Cannonball Run" movies, silly yet high profile car chase comedies(the first being more revered than the second). "...He gained widespread fame on the Dean Martin Show as "Dominick the Great," a magician whose act routinely went wrong."  It seems really random to put "Smokey 2" in the first line of someone's obit, when you have several more high profile and influential projects to choose from. »

Dom DeLuise's Funniest Film Roles (Video)

Dom DeLuise, a comedy great, died Monday night after a long illness. He is survived by sons Michael, Peter and David, and dozens of hilarious films. His most memorable performances were often in the hands of writer-director-actor Mel Brooks who cast him in "The Twelve Chairs," "Blazing Saddles," "Silent Movie," "History of the World Part I," "Spaceballs," and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." Here are some of his most memorable film roles from an expansive career... Blazing Saddles (1974) DeLuise played Buddy Bizarre, a musical director whose set is interrupted by the fight between the townsfolk and Lamarr's army of thugs. It's one of the few times you see him dancing, which is (obviously) hilarious. Watch: Cannonball Run (1981) DeLuise played Victor Prinzim, a mild-mannered mechanic with a crazed alter-ego named "Captain Chaos." We meet Victor about 4 minutes into this clip when... »
