Four-time Academy Award nominee Jeff Bridges stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature film Crazy Heart from writer-director Scott Cooper.

Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (two-time Golden Globe nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart.

Fueled by country rock, Crazy Heart also stars Robert Duvall and features original songs from Grammy-winning and Academy Award-nominated composer and producer T Bone Burnett along with the late Texas songwriter Stephen Bruton.

Paul Giamatti tends to play moody defeatists and rageful misanthropes. Which is just the way he likes it

'I'm clearly not Brad Pitt, and I'm never going to be Brad Pitt," says Paul Giamatti, closely inspecting his coffee cup in a Polish restaurant in a leafy neighbourhood of Brooklyn. "But I don't think I'd want to be Brad Pitt, you know? So that's Ok."

This is partly just a reference to Giamatti's "character-actor" looks, but also to something deeper: a sense of composure, of being comfortable in one's own skin, that the archetypal Hollywood star exudes but both Giamatti and his characters tend to lack. Want to go see a Broadway or West End stage play—but at the local cinema?  No, it’s not a filmed stage production.  It’s a play translated to the film medium, but with complete faithfulness to the original play script.  Not only that, it stars big name actors and is directed by a top-notch director.  To complete the conceit, you get handed a playbill (program) when you enter the theater.  There might even be an intermission—or two!  And you have only four showtimes at which you can view the picture before it disappears, and you have to buy your ticket in advance with a subscription for a whole “season” of these filmed plays, or staged films, or whatever you want to call them. »
