  • The Cherry Lane Theatre, site of the Prodigal Son scene, was where the play "Godspell" opened off Broadway in 1971.

  • Two major songs were removed that were from the original stage musical; "We Beseech Thee" and "Learn Your Lessons Well". Both, however, have instrumental "cameos". "We Beseech Thee" appears in the Cherry Lane Theatre scene, while the "car calliope" scene does "Learn Your Lessons Well". In addition, a new song was made specifically for the movie, "Beautiful City", which has become a part of subsequent stage versions.

  • "All For The Best" ends atop the World Trade Center, still under construction.

  • Composer Stephen Schwartz has a cameo in the prologue sequence: Katie serves him a cup of coffee as he is seated at the counter of the diner.

  • Victor Garber's first movie.

  • Godspell moved from off Broadway to Broadway's Broadhurst Theater on June 22, 1976 and ran for 527 performances. Robin Lamont was the only player in the original off Broadway cast, the movie version, and the Broadway cast.

  • The final scene was filmed at the southeast corner of Park Avenue & 68th Street in Manhattan, across the street from Hunter College.

  • In a letter published in the Dec. 6, 1972 issue of Variety, director David Greene wrote that "[John-Michael] Tebelak and I are enjoying an ideally smooth working relationship... but he is not co-directing the film with me. He did not write the screenplay. He participated only minimally in pre-production planning and discussions, and attended very few rehearsals."
