Trivia:
Cicely Tyson commented in a TCM interview that director Martin Ritt's cinematographer (principal cameraman), while shooting the famous "homecoming sequence" with Tyson and co-star Paul Winfield, was so moved by their performances that he was certain he missed framing the action properly in the shots and respectfully asked them to do the difficult scene again. They obliged, but a later examination of daily rushes revealed that they got shot and acting perfect the first time, and take 1 was a print. more

Another rural slice of yesterday from Martin Ritt...genuine and beautiful emotions strung out on a shoestring, 15 October 2009
6/10
Author: moonspinner55 from redlands, ca

An exceedingly thin, though often lovely-looking story about a poorly black sharecropper and his family dealing with financial hardships in the Depression-scarred 1930s. Cicely Tyson gives a wonderfully gritty and natural performance playing the mother of three young ones in rural Louisiana who is left in charge of her ramshackle homestead after her husband is arrested for trespassing and robbery (stealing a ham) and sentenced to one year on a prison work farm. Adapted from the book by William H. Armstrong, this is an emotional piece of yesteryear, complimented by authentic locations and an appealing cast. If the midsection of the movie (focusing on the eldest son's education) seems to stray, one almost doesn't notice due to director Martin Ritt's rapt attention to narrative and character. Followed by a sequel in 1976. **1/2 from ****
