Don't get me wrong...I like Paul Naschy (Jacinto Molina) films, but I was rather surprised that this was a Leon Klimovsky film on Dracula without Naschy. Despite that (or perhaps because of that), it's a surprisingly good film. A pregnant woman, Berta, and her husband, Hans, are heading to the woman's grandfather's castle, the grandfather of course, being Count Dracula. There's the usual superstitious stuff about the local villagers being frightened of those people, and with good reason, since it appears that women at the local inn have puncture marks on their necks and one has just been found by our hapless couple with puncture marks on more than just her neck. But still, our intrepid couple reach the castle and find that grandfather, cousins, etc., all appear to be dead; this due to crypts that are found marking their birth and death dates. Of course, after dark though, they all appear, and eventually our fearful Berta begins to realize what they are. The good Count is delighted that he shall have someone to carry on the family line, and after the death of Hans, Berta has pretty well lost her mind and exists only to give birth. This is beautifully filmed & the BCI DVD is a mostly good transfer, with the original Spanish (Castillian) dialog. There are some areas though where it almost appears that a screen of some kind is across what you're seeing..not sure it that's as good as the print gets or if it's a defect on the DVD. Still though, it's a pretty damned good film & well worth seeing. Oh, and don't let me forget Valerio...Valerio was once (I guess) going to be the heir to the Dracula bloodline, but I guess something happened & things didn't turn out as expected..in other words, Valerio is some kind of one-eyed monstrosity that gets fed stray gypsies every once in a while. Anyway, this is a worthwhile find and I'd recommend it to fans of Euro-horror. 8 out of 10.
