Hunchback of the Morgue, The (1972)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

A deformed hunchback (Paul Naschy) is picked on by everyone except for a beautiful woman. When that woman dies the hunchback goes to a scientist in hopes that he can bring her back to life. The doctor says he can but in return he wants the hunchback to do some killing for him. Loosely based on Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue the film also mixes in elements of Frankenstein but the end results aren't too good. The film works for a couple reasons but one isn't a very good reason. The dubbing of the film leads to some very funny scenes including one hilarious one where a bunch of kids are throwing rocks at the hunchback. The dubs moans are hysterical. The only other good thing is the gore, which there's plenty of here. Other laughs happen when a bunch of rats attack the hunchback only to run away after he sets them on fire. I've always wondered why Naschy plays himself as such a sex symbol but even as a hunchback he's able to bed beautiful women. I'm not sure if this would work better in its original language but the laughs and gore made it worth viewing.
