A bizarre, demanding but unrewarding movie by Claude Chabrol - maybe he was trying for something profound and symbolic here, but it isn't very well transferred to the viewer. His direction is gimmicky and pretentious; most of the technical gimmicks serve no purpose, and the whole thing never really pays off. Worth watching mostly for Orson Welles' imposing presence, though you may also enjoy Anthony Perkins' "Norman(Bates)-like" performance. (**)
