'Pioniere in Ingolstadt' (= German for 'pioneers in Ingolstadt') deals with people ranking low in public appreciation: the lowest ranks of the military in peacetime conditions.

It's all there: finding yourself back at some forsaken distant place, far from home. Hard physical labor + tough discipline when on duty, utter boredom after duty. The locals ignore you, unless they can earn money on you. The result: indulging in booze & women.

Fassbinder deserves praise for using such an unpopular theme to make such a good & recognizable movie. The same goes for his chosen angle: through the eyes of three local girls, setting their hopes on the appearance of these military men in their hometown Ingolstadt. Each in her own way.

'Pioniere in Ingolstadt' gets a slightly surrealistic touch by mixing German Hitler-soldiers, with swastikas on their uniforms, with these three 1970s-miniskirted girls. This historical imprecision does not matter much, though: the doomed interaction between soldiers and local girls has not changed through the ages.

This takes us to the decisive condition to appreciate 'Pioniere in Ingolstadt': you must have lived a life like this yourself. In my opinion this condition also explains why this Fassbinder-film received such a lukewarm acclaim.
