Celebrity Photographer Willoughby Dies

29 December 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Celebrity photographer Bob Willoughby has died, aged 82.

Willoughby, who photographed Audrey Hepburn, Roman Polanski and Mia Farrow, Frank Sinatra, Dustin Hoffman, and many others on Hollywood movie sets, lost his battle with cancer on 18 December at his home in Vence, in the South of France.

In the early 1950s he began photographing jazz musicians in California clubs, notably Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan.

He became well known in Hollywood after Warner Brothers asked him to photograph Judy Garland on the set of her 1954 film A Star Is Born. The iconic photo later landed the cover of Life magazine.

Willoughby also created lasting images of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on the set of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Jane Fonda at work on Klute, Hepburn on Roman Holiday, and Sinatra, whom he photographed with the Rat Pack in front of the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas during the filming of Ocean’s Eleven.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his sons Christopher, Stephen and David, a daughter, Catherine, and eight grandchildren. »

'Family Demons' article; Katt Shea on 'Klute'; and Faye Jackson Interview

Check out this awesome interview with vampire movie Strigoi director Faye Jackson (Lump) on one of our fave boy-run sites QuietEarth - Faye Jackson Interview

You should also read this extremely cool academic paper on the brand new horror film Family Demons directed by Ursula Dabrowsky written by Donna McRae - Family Demons: The Ghost of Domestic Inheritence

Katt Shea (Poison Ivy) has a new commentary up on Trailers From Hell for the trailer to Klute. From the bygone days (1971) when studios routinely made the kind of adult material now found mainly in indies. Jane Fonda pulled down a well-deserved Oscar for her portrayal of the call girl without a heart of gold who gets wrapped up in a murder investigation.

The Forgotten: Head Shots

5 December 2009 4:23 AM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

A strange, ringing tinnitus sound in the subway. A man, his shirt and face spattered profusely with blood, shambles in catatonic stupor up the stairs. Another man, blood gouting from a wound in his brow, staggers down the stairs. These men have something in common, but because of that very something, they do not notice each other.

Jules Feiffer, cartoonist, playwright, author and illustrator, is so multi-talented and so refined and brilliant in each of his talents that it's perversely easy to underrate him. For instance, as screenwriter of Mike Nichols' film Carnal Knowledge and Robert Altman's film Popeye, his work brackets the celebrated New Hollywood cinema of the 1970s. Add to that one screenplay for Alain Resnais (I Want to Go Home, 1989) and 1971's disturbing family comedy Little Murders, directed by Alan Arkin, and Feiffer's contribution to cinema becomes a small but vital one.

Top 10 conspiracy films of the 70s

3 December 2009 5:19 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Richard Kelly’s The Box opens today in the UK, you can read my review here, and to celebrate the 70s paranoia vibe we’re posting this look back at some of the greatest conspiracy/paranoia thrillers of that decade. There are some great films here, and The Box does its best to emulate this, so you might want to look into some of these when you’re done with Kelly’s latest.

Klute 1971

Strongly following the crime / investigation genre, this film tells the story of a conspiracy theory that may be a little more personal, a little more close to home. Realistic and gritty (it centres on a prostitute); it promises the keep fans of 70’s films on their edge of their seat. ‘Don’t be afraid…’

When laboratory engineer Tom Gruneman (Robert Mili) disappears, the only clue available to detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) is an obscene letter »

6 Brilliant Films by This Weekend's Honorary Oscar-Winning Dp Gordon Willis

13 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Gordon Willis is the best cinematographer America ever produced. There. I said it. If he'd only shot the Godfather trilogy, Manhattan, Zelig and All the President's Men (let alone Pennies From Heaven, Interiors, Klute and Broadway Danny Rose), he'd have at least earned consideration among the greats like Gregg Toland and Billy Bitzer and his Oscar-winning contemporaries Conrad Hall and Haskell Wexler. And very few would argue against Willis being the best American cinematographer to never win an Oscar -- until tomorrow, that is, when Willis will join Roger Corman as a recipient of a long, long over lifetime-achievement Academy Award. In a series of clips after the jump, see some of what the Academy missed (and is finally making up for) all these years. »

By Steve Pond

Notes on the honorary Oscar recipients, part four:

For many years, Gordon Willis was the guy who was thanked from the stage of the Oscar show, but overlooked in the nominations.

As a cinematographer who started making movies in 1970, he shot films whose looks were iconic: “The Godfather,” “All the President’s Men,” “Klute,” “The Parallax View,” “The Godfather Part II,” “All the President’s Men,” “Annie Hall,” “Interiors,” “Manhattan&rdqu »

Donald Sutherland directed toward CBS' 'Eastmans'

26 March 2009 12:01 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Donald Sutherland as the patriarch of a wealthy, intelligent, eccentric family? That sounds so crazy it just might work! According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Dirty Sexy Money" star has been cast as the family patriarch in CBS' "The Eastmans," about a dysfunctional family of doctors.  The trade says that Sutherland's character is a roguish, but distinguished cardiologist. Sutherland joins David Wilson Barnes, Saffron Burrows, Gaby Hoffman and Jesse Bradford in the drama. Most recently seen as Tripp Darling on ABC's not-yet-cancelled-but-probably-not-coming-back "Dirty Sexy Money," Sutherland's other recent TV credits include ABC's "Commander in Chief." On the big screen, the "Klute" »

Can Angela Lansbury tie Tony record with a fifth win for 'Blithe Spirit'?

17 March 2009 2:31 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Angela Lansbury has returned to her first love — the theater — in triumph, earning rave reviews for her appearance as a larger-than-life medium in the revival of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit." Angela Lansbury has already won four Tony Awards for lead actress in a musical — "Mame" (1966), "Dear World" (1969), "Gypsy" (1975) and "Sweeney Todd" (1979). Two years ago, she contended for the first time as lead actress in a play for "Deuce" but was bested by Julie White for "The Little Dog Laughed." Were she to win for this new role in the old chestnut "Blithe Spirit,"  Lansbury would be tied with Julie Harris who has five Tony Awards, all for lead actress in a play.

The original 1941 run of "Blithe Spirit" predated the Tony Awards by six years. However for the 1987 revival, Geraldine Page contended as lead actress for playing Madame Arcati. She lost to Linda Lavin in Neil Simon's "Broadway Bound. »

Breakfast With... Georgia

9 March 2009 6:11 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

"Oh my god what is that?"

Lindsay Lohan has trouble recognizing solids. Duh, Linds, it's oatmeal with blueberries. Orange juice and toast on the side. Georgia (Jane Fonda) provides. Blueberries... damn, wish they were in season. So good for you. They improve your memory, prevent cancer, all sorts of good things.

"You visit this blog, you eat breakfast. Georgia Nathaniel Rule!"

P.S. Now that Fonda is working again can someone give her a great role? We need one more Klute or Coming Home or They Shoot Horses... I think. One more for the road.
