Sarkozy Honours Eastwood With Top French Honour

13 November 2009 5:36 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

French President Nicolas Sarkozy paid tribute to Clint Eastwood on Friday when he presented the movie icon with the nation's highest cultural honour.

Eastwood was made a commander in the prestigious Legion of Honor in Paris two years after Sarkozy's predecessor Jacques Chirac honoured the Dirty Harry star as a knight of the Legion of Honor.

The actor/director, who flew to France for the ceremony, said, "This is a wonderful honour... I really love France. I love movies, and I love the appreciation that the French people have for movies." »

Eastwood Becomes A Soccer Mascot

18 October 2009 6:36 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie icon Clint Eastwood swapped Hollywood for central France this weekend, when he was made an honorary mascot for soccer team Olympique Lyon.

The 79-year-old Oscar winner was invited to receive an award at the first ever Lyon Film Festival - prompting bosses at the country's top soccer squad to try and turn Eastwood into a good luck charm.

The screen legend was marched onto the pitch ahead of the team's game against Sochaux on Saturday and conducted a ceremonial kick-off in heavy rain - after being presented with a Lyon jersey with his name on the back.

But the Dirty Harry star's presence failed to inspire Lyon, who stumbled to their first defeat of the season.

Eastwood picked up an award for his contribution to film at the festival, being held in the birthplace of Augusto and Louis Lumiere - who invented cinema in the 19th century. »

In Profile: Bruce Willis

1 October 2009 4:22 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Bruce Willis is not a bad actor. He just occasionally acts in bad movies. It’s not entirely his fault either. Shall we put it down to “bold choices” that didn’t work out? If in a charitable mood, sure. There has always been a touch of uncertainty about Willis. He does not appear to be a natural storyteller.

Let’s say acting is an egotistical, ridiculous career option for anybody. Consider it. Even before the lucrative potential is taken into account – pretending to be other people is rather odd. Actors take up a lifetime of lying and fantasying in some vainglorious search for truth (fame and wealth too, if we are being cynical). Is it completely stupid or brave? Actors as pathological liars or sociopaths is a salient thought.

The American studios created the film star and it destroys them. Maintaining a lifelong and popular career in such a fickle, »

Matt Damon And Clint Eastwood To Tap The Spirit World In 'Hereafter'

18 September 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

You'd think that "The Informant!" star Matt Damon and filmmaker Clint Eastwood would right now be preparing to promote their first collaboration, Oscar-bait "Invictus," which is due for a mid-December release. And they probably are, but that doesn't mean other business is being ignored. As Variety reports today, the director and star are all set to get the band back together for another project, titled "Hereafter."

There's not much to go on in terms of plot points just yet. The article states that Warner Bros. isn't saying much, other than describing the project as a supernatural thriller in the vein of "The Sixth Sense." I wasn't a big fan of M. Night Shyamalan's breakout, but Eastwood is a more nuanced filmmaker; here's hoping he doesn't pin this new movie's success to a single, mind-bending twist. The script comes from "Frost/Nixon" writer Peter Morgan, who will also produce alongside Steven Spielberg, »

Aaron Eckhart Ready For The 'Intense Action' Of 'Battle: Los Angeles'

10 September 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Happy “Battle: Los Angeles” week, folks! We’ve been eagerly tracking this so-out-there-it’s-gotta-be-awesome project for awhile around these parts, and with Ne-Yo joining the cast it’s gotten even more interesting. Aliens, scandal-plagued rappers, Harvey Dent kicking ass -– as cameras begin rolling on the February 2011 flick, what more do you need?

One of the more interesting aspects of the film emerged earlier this year, when we interviewed filmmaker Jonathan Liebesman, who oversaw “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” and this year’s impressive Sundance thriller “The Killing Room.” At the time, the only actor who had come on board the aliens-invade-Los Angeles film was Aaron Eckhart, and Liebesman said that the star was planning to channel Dirty Harry.

“He’s like a Clint Eastwood-esque leader of the platoon,” Liebesman said of the “Dark Knight” actor’s first true action hero role.

But on Tuesday, we caught up with »

The Best of the Obsessed

4 September 2009 12:26 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The Best of the Obsessed Sandra Bullock's new film All About Steve is hitting theaters today. In the film, Bullock plays Mary Horowitz, a woman who is set up on a blind date with Steve (Bradley Cooper) and instantly believes that they are soul mates. Obsessively, Mary decides to follow Steve anywhere he goes and will stop at nothing to be with him. This got me thinking about how Hollywood often produces movies centering the domineering, aggressive and downright crazy, on-the-edge female character. Today, the majority of them are stereotypes, cliched personas of other characters (such as Bullock's Mary in Steve) and are, honestly, annoying. Here are what I believe to be some of the best of the obsessed female characters to grace the silver screen. 10.Cameron Diaz in Vanilla Sky (2001) I remember seeing this film in theaters and saying to myself “Cameron Diaz better be nominated for an Oscar. »

Hollywood Bokeh: The Day the Music Died

1 September 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Film and TV is a unique medium in that it is usually comprised of a combination of disciplines: Literature, photography, design, theater and music, just to name a few. All these aspects work in tandem in service to the larger picture to provide an all-encompassing artistic experience.

Music, like any other artform has a tendency from time to time re-invent itself. Constantly challenging what has come before, and discovering new means of expression. Often, we can tell the period from which a piece has been composed simply by its stylistic choices: the jazzy '60s, the disco '70s, the techno '80s... and so on.

Film music has always had an important part in the overall emotional impact of a movie. Whether it takes the back seat in providing an aural landscape, or front and centre with sweeping musical themes. Some may argue that music, when it services the film correctly, »

I have, at times, jokingly admonished friends with a quick, "Put ... that coffee ... down," channeling Alec Baldwin's irate salesman in "Glengarry Glen Ross." Or attempted to intimidate with Clint Eastwood's classic "Do you feel lucky ... punk?" from "Dirty Harry."

In my younger days, I took inspiration from Sean Penn's archetype stoner Jeff Spicoli, hitting himself in the head with a checkered skateboard sneaker in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High": "That was my skull! I'm so wasted! »

This Week’s Best Bets: ‘The Good, The Bad And The Ugly’ Rides Into Town!

6 July 2009 3:28 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Last week’s flood of comics has receded, but there’s still some great issues with crossover appeal hitting shelves this week that you should add to your list. Here’s what’s looking good:

“The Good, The Bad And The Ugly” #1 (Dynamite) — Clint Eastwood’s iconic “Man with No Name” rides again in this brand new story by writer Chuck Dixon and artist Esteve Polls. I don’t care what you say about “Dirty Harry,” folks — “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and the rest of the “Man With No Name” films were Eastwood at his cigar-chompin’, squinty-eyed best. This issue kicks off the five-part story “Dead Man’s Hand,” and I couldn’t be happier to see the character continue to be one of the premiere bad-asses in any medium.

Blu-Ray Review: Beloved ‘Gran Torino’ Gets HD Treatment

18 June 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Is it coincidental that Clint Eastwood’s beloved and uber-manly “Gran Torino” is hitting Blu-Ray and DVD just in time for shoppers looking for a great Father’s Day gift? Of course not. No one knows marketing like Warner Brothers and the well-timed and transferred “Gran Torino” should satisfy many a proud pop this season.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 I’m a huge Clint Eastwood fan as an actor and director. “Mystic River”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “Unforgiven,” and “Letters From Iwo Jima” are some of the best films of the last twenty years. But he’s not perfect and when I saw “Gran Torino” in theaters, I thought it fell much closer to missteps like “Space Cowboys” and “Pink Cadillac” than his best.

Gran Torino was released on Blu-Ray on June 9th, 2009.

DVD of the Week: 'Gran Torino.' Plus 'The International' and More...

9 June 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

As a sort of cross between Dirty Harry and Archie Bunker, Clint Eastwood's Korean War vet Walt Kowalski snarls racial slurs with a hoary glee, and gives his immigrant neighbors the stink-eye from the porch of his pristine Americana home in a Detroit suburb that's gone downhill. When violent and disturbing events unfold that cause him to reluctantly befriend—and soon defend—the Vietnamese family next door, the Harry side comes out in full force...for better or worse. You can see the inevitable coming in this racially charged parable, but it's an intriguing ride getting there. A sometimes clunky, hamfisted script is boosted by great performances, and Clint will make your day with his often laugh-out-loud delivery of ethnic epithets too blue to reprint here. Also New...

DVD’s I Bought This Week: June 9th

9 June 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Rob Hunter loves movies.  He also loves working as a professional hitman who targets women and children only because movies and books tell him they're an untapped niche market.  These two joys come together in the form of cash money payments that he receives every week and immediately uses to buy more DVDs.  So join us each week as he takes a look at new DVD releases and gives his highly unqualified opinion as to which titles are worth BUYing, which are better off as RENTals, and which should be AVOIDed at all costs. Click on any of the titles below to magically head over to Amazon.com and pick up the DVD. Gran Torino Pitch: The touching tale of a grumpy old man who begrudgingly befriends a young Asian boy during a balloon ride to South America. Why Buy? Talkin' Westerns with A.C. Lyles

Editor’s note: This article originally appeared at EightMillionStories.com on February 27, 2009

There’s an A.C. Lyles Building at the Paramount Pictures main lot, but you won’t find A.C. Lyles there; his office is on the fourth floor of the William S. Hart Building.

When I arrived for our interview, Mr. Lyles was chatting with some visitors in his outer office. He bid me into his main office, and asked his assistant Pam to put in a video… a short promo reel that opens with a six minute tribute by then-President Ronald Reagan, who warmly recalls his and Nancy’s many years of friendship with A.C. and his wife Martha, and congratulates A.C. on his fifty years at the studio. The President’s intro is followed by taped congratulations from President Carter, President Ford, and Vice President Bush, then assorted clips celebrating Mr. »

Star Wars line named most misquoted by fans in new survey

11 May 2009 4:44 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Quoting movie lines is part and parcel of the film fan’s arsenal. If you’ve loved the movie, chances are you’ve loved the characters and their dialogue and sometimes you’re barely out of the auditorium before you’re repeating your favourite snatches of their conversations. However, it turns out that no matter how devoted we are as cinephiles, we don’t always get everything right and often fail in our bid to accurately quote the movies. And LOVEFiLM have found that the line we most abuse is one from sci-fi saga Star Wars.

Spoken by Darth Vader to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in The Empire Strikes Back, the actual line is ” No, I am your father”, yet is often misquoted as “Luke, I am your father.” This ranked highest with the 1,500 film fans questioned by LOVEFiLM with the second place taken by animated masterpiece Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. »

Blood Work Movie Review

20 April 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

From 2002, Clint Eastwood is fine as a detective, investigating a murder after receiving a new heart from the killer's sister. Mind you, Eastwood is no "Dirty Harry" in this movie and nor should he be; he stands fine on his own (closer to himself I think) in this suspenseful thriller (not the most suspenseful, but "Bloodwork" does an admirable job in keeping viewer to the story at hand). Eastwood owns a boat in a California marina and it is here where the viewer are lead through clues to the murder of a killer. He also has to go through alot of bureaucratic bungling and red tape through the ... »

The Italians Are Invading Chiller Theatre! Mini-Interviews with Ian McCulloch, Silvia Collatina & Michael Sopkiw!

The Italians Are Invading Chiller Theatre!

Fans of 1980s Italian exploitation have every reason to rejoice. In three weeks, Chiller Theatre in Parsippany, New Jersey will host the Italian Invasion, a gathering of a number of stars from the Fulci period. Mike Baronas has put together a great collection of guests that include: the 30th anniversary Zombie reunion with Ian McCulloch, Al Cliver, Richard Johnson, and old Worm Eye himself, Ottaviano Dell’acqua; Silvia Collatina and Giovanni Frezza, the child couple from Fulci’s House By The Cemetery; sci-fi/ horror director Luigi Cozzi; action star Michael Sopkiw; and Fulci actresses Malisa Longo and Zora Kerowa, the latter of Anthropophagus fame.

In anticipation of the Italian Invasion, Mike Baronas was gracious enough to grant me access to three of the Invasion guests for quick interviews. I thank Ian McCulloch, Silvia Collatina and Michael Sopkiw for taking the time to answer my questions. »
