Cole Slams Marriage Split Rumours

21 November 2009 6:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has taken to the internet to silence rumours her marriage is in trouble - by posting a picture of herself wearing her wedding ring online.

The singer wed soccer star Ashley Cole in a lavish ceremony in 2006, but last year their relationship was rocked by allegations the sportsman had a fling on an alcohol-fuelled night out with his teammates.

They have since put on a united front, but rumours of a split were fuelled recently when the couple was spotted arguing at a charity event. The singer was subsequently seen appearing on the British talent show without her wedding ring.

But the star has moved to dismiss speculation about the union with a telling post on her Twitter.com blog page - she has posted a picture of herself holding her left hand up to the camera, complete with her sparkling diamond band.

The post reads, "3 Words. Diamonds Are Forever." »

Sean Connery and Shirley Bassey reunite

19 November 2009 4:32 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Their distinctive tones, last heard in the same film in 1971's Diamonds Are Forever, will feature in an animated adventure about a vet attempting to rescue a beaver

It's a far cry from Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. But animated tale Sir Billi the Vet, about the attempts of a retired Scottish animal doctor to rescue a fugitive beaver, will have one thing in common with the James Bond classics: the voices of Sean Connery and Shirley Bassey.

The veteran Scots actor has signed up to voice the lead, while Bassey takes singing duties on the title song, Guardian of the Highlands, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It's the first time their vocal talents have appeared in the same film since Diamonds Are Forever in 1971.

The husband and wife creative team behind the project, Sascha and Tessa Hartmann, always had Bassey in mind to sing the title track.

Is censorship taking over the BBC? | Mark Lawson

19 November 2009 12:54 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Classes on goodies and baddies, endless rows about jokes in poor taste . . . is an increasingly cautious BBC suffocating new comedy and drama? Mark Lawson on the climate of fear at Broadcasting House

On Saturday, it will be one year since the BBC Trust ruled on Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand's dirty phone calls to Andrew Sachs. These represented "deplorable intrusion with no editorial justification", the Trust concluded, but no further action was necessary beyond the three-month suspension that Ross was then beginning to serve.

At the time, a common view (certainly mine) was that, 12 months on, Ross might well have found a job elsewhere, but that the BBC's general panic over editorial guidelines might have calmed down. In fact, it has gone the other way. Ross remains in his post – a ghost of what he used to be, because of a strict system of precautionary recording and editing – while »

Sean Connery Emerges From Retirement For 'Sir Billi,' Joins 'Goldfinger' Singer Shirley Bassey

18 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Sean Connery supposed to be drinking delicious dragon's tears from the Holy Grail while surrounded by a harem of every beautiful Bond girl in cinema history? That was the impression I was under regarding the beloved actor's retirement plan — as it turns out, I was misinformed.

The erstwhile Henry Jones, Sr. is taking a break from retirement to lend his vocal talents to Sascha and Tessa Hartmann's "Sir Billi," a CGI animated film that's been in production for five years and is set to be completed in 2010. Alan Cumming, Miriam Margoyles, Ruby Wax and others are also providing voice work in the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Sir Billi" focuses on "a retired, skateboarding veterinarian who lives in a remote Scottish village and who spearheads the rescue of an illegal fugitive who also happens to be a beaver."

Yeah. That would get me out of retirement, »

Psst! Buddy! Wanna Buy a Lion?

16 November 2009 5:45 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

· It's official: MGM is for sale. The venerable studio, with its James Bond franchise, massive film library and some of the most patient creditors in Hollywood, is now welcoming offers; Time Warner, News Corp. and Lionsgate are among the likeliest suitors. I'm pulling for the latter company to make this happen -- partly for the symmetry of their brand names, but mostly because Tyler Perry's Diamonds are Forever is a 007 movie I think we all want to see sooner than later. British comedy films: Make 'em laugh! Well, that's the theory

13 November 2009 12:53 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Shaun of the Dead was good, Sex Lives of the Potato Men was bad. So how do you avoid a Britcom disaster?

Anywhere else, it would be a cause for celebration. Later this month, a debut feature is to be released by the director of one of Britain's most popular TV comedies. Bafta-nominated for his work on BBC2's The Mighty Boosh, Paul King is also an award-winning live comedy director – and his new film Bunny and the Bull was selected for both the Toronto and London film festivals. Here, then, is a cheering tale of a home-grown talent making his way in cinema, right? If only it were that simple. "There's a pack mentality with British comic films to go, 'What a heap of shit!'" says King. "Your worst nightmare is, 'Oh God, I just hope my film's not one of those …'"

One of those? Does he »

Shelf Life: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

29 October 2009 5:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

While the majority of Cinematical's "Shelf Life" columns thus far have targeted specific releases that relate to new films, the truth is that we came up with this series so that we could go back and watch movies we wanted to see, whether it was to experience them for the first time after an eon of reactions and expectations, or just to see whether we were the same people we were when we first saw them, or just maybe, to champion an overlooked gem that disappeared into the ether after its initial release. This week's selection, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, falls into the third category, and we're happy to revisit it instead of some completely random movie that most folks already know they like.

The Facts: Directed by Peter Hunt, who previously edited three of the earlier films in the series, On Her Majesty's Secret Service marked the arrival »

Fantastic Fest Review: Mandrill

29 September 2009 11:02 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

In a lot of ways, I am the perfect member of the Death Squad to write this review.  In other ways, I may be the worst person.  Two years ago, at Fantastic Fest III, I discovered a film from Chile called MiragemanMirageman I think is most aptly described as Batman Begins if you took away Bruce Wayne's bankroll.  It is about a young man who wants to become a superhero in order to inspire, and ultimately help to heal, his traumatized younger brother.  While he has the will and happens to be a phenomenal martial artist, he has absolutely no resources and not the first clue on how to go about being a hero.  What that film lacked in budget it made up for in heart and entertainment value and I loved every living second of it.  It instantly became one of my favorite of the festival and honestly, one »

The First News And Views Of Duncan Jones’s Mute

15 September 2009 3:59 AM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Looks like Duncan Jones, he of Moon fame, has started pre production work on “Mute”, his Blade Runner inspired Sci-Fi that will be set in future Berlin(!). From Liberty Films, Duncan’s production company, comes this concept art shot, showing a rain soaked and shiny street where a Blade Runnerish hover car awaits a group of black clad Sci-Fi hipsters, striking dangerous poses in the neon light.  Liberty Films has booked a major Berlin studio already. We’re happy. Mute is about a mute bartender looking for his missing girlfriend in future Berlin. It seems the villians will be a comedy duo. Reminds me kind of the bad guy duos in Diamonds Are Forever or the fantastically bad duo, Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar, in the hopefully soon to be a major motion picture, Neil Gaimen’s Neverwhere, a book you need to go and buy right this very minute. »

The Blu-Ray Review: From Russia With Love (1963)

26 August 2009 4:13 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin reviews the second James Bond film in the series.

For reasons that seem absolutely mystifying to me now, I used to dislike 1963's From Russia With Love, the second James Bond film. I always liked its predecessor, 1962's Dr. No, and I absolutely adored the follow-up, 1964's Goldfinger.

For reasons unknown, I just couldn't get into Russia. I vaguely recall an impression that it was dull and slow moving, but now that I've seen it again, I think I must have watched it on Opposite Day, for the truth of the matter is quite different from my old perception.

In fact, I now feel that Russia is clearly one of the best Bond films. It surpasses Dr. No and definitely rivals Goldfinger and 1965's Thunderball. Man, what was I thinking when I disliked this movie? I guess I'm not infallible after all!

In any case, I find Russia to »

Meg: Hell’S Aquarium (Book Review)

16 July 2009 10:58 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

From our Starlog site...

Meg: Hell’S Aquarium by Steve Alten (Variance, hc, 342 pp, $27.95)

For this fourth novel in his blood-drenched Meg saga, Alten brings us not just one live Carcharodon megalodon, the giant, prehistoric antecedent of today’s Great White Shark, but Seven of them: Angel, her ex-mate Scarface, their five daughters (Belle, Lizzy, Mary Kate, Ashley, Angelica). That’s one hungry horde. Alten also serves up a large cast of lunchable humans—many named after die-hard fans of his books who nabbed this honor in website contests by promising to promote Alten’s work. That’s marketing genius! However, a slight silliness does set in whenever Alten introduces a “character” and we get a graph recounting their (presumably true) background—and then they die two pages later or we otherwise never hear of them again.

Hell’S Aquarium has three intertwined storylines. James & Terry Taylor (heroes of »

Michael Sheen as Blofeld for Bond 23...?

17 June 2009 12:10 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

We recently reported that Peter Morgan, who penned The Queen and Frost/Nixon, will be co-scripting the new James Bond movie with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and that Afghanistan might factor into the plot-line somehow.

Now comes word from The Guardian that Michael Sheen, who has collaborated in the past with Morgan on the aforementioned movies, is in negotiations to play Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Bond 23.

Blofeld back for Bond 23...? That's what the UK paper is reporting.

"Michael is hot property right now and it is felt that he's the right man to bring Blofeld back to life," an unnamed source revealed. "Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him."

Blofeld is the head of Spectre and has appeared in six previous James Bond installments: From Russia with Love (1963), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty's Secret Service »

Michael Sheen may revise role of Bond bad guy

17 June 2009 3:18 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

James Bond’s arch enemy, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, may be resurrected, yet again, says the Guardian UK. Michael Sheen, of Frost/Nixon, The Queen, and most recently having finished filming the role of Aro in New Moon, is said to be negotiating the nemesis of the debonair, everlasting Bond 007. The character best known for his trademark companion white cat, Blofeld has been portrayed over the years by several actors including: Donald Pleasance (“You Only Live Twice”) Telly Savalas (“On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”) Charles Gray (“Diamonds Are Forever”) Max von Sydow (“Never Say Never Again”) Mike Myers has taken the character of Blofeld to a whole new level with “Dr. Evil” of the Austin Powers series with a scarred face and bald head. Sheen is said to be a fan of the Bond series, and his working relationship with writer Peter Morgan is a definite notch on his side. »

Michael Sheen ‘In Talks’ For ‘Bond’ Villain Blofeld

16 June 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

British actor Michael Sheen, who will be seen by millions this fall in “New Moon,” is reportedly in talks to join the James Bond franchise for yet another iconic role. According to an anonymous source, Sheen is up for the villainous part of Blofeld in the 23rd installment of the 007 series, which is currently being co-scripted by two-time Oscar-nominated writer Peter Morgan.

Morgan and Sheen have collaborated many times before, most memorably for “Frost/Nixon” and “The Queen,” in which he portrayed former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. It’s possible that this link between writer and actor has led to speculative rumors of Sheen’s interest and involvement in the Bond film, but we’re hoping that it’s true. Apparently Sheen has been a fan of the 007 series since his youth, so he is likely crossing his fingers, as well.

Though Sheen is a well-respected actor, he is no stranger to mainstream franchises. »

Rare Movie Alert! TCM Airs "The Anderson Tapes" Tonight

14 May 2009 11:18 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Turner Classic Movies (North America) is keeping their Friday night Sean Connery tributes on a hot streak. Tonight, for example, the network screens back-to-back showings of the James Bond flicks You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever, followed by a rare telecast of Sidney Lumet's 1971 thriller The Anderson Tapes which casts Connery as a master thief who devises an outlandish plan to "rob the guts" out of a New York luxury apartment building over Labor Day weekend. The film was Connery's first notable hit outside of the Bond canon, enjoying favorable reviews and substantial box-office. Not only is the Great Scot in top form, but the film benefits from a spectacular supporting cast including Dyan Cannon (stripping to her bra for a memorable bedroom scene), Ralph Meeker, comedian Alan King (excellent as mob boss), Christopher Walken (in his first feature film), Stan Gottlieb as a geriatric con man, »
