You would think such a great talent in Dick Van Dyke, and production by Hollywood legend by Carl Reiner but this one really was not up to par of their previous effort the Dick Van Dyke Show. I guess Dick was too old, not his youthful self (he had a serious alcohol problem) and the supporting cast was not up to par to Richard Deacon , Morey Amsterdam and the rest of the great cast.
The writing was decent but the sophistication of the Dick Van Dyke show was not captured here. This show, where Dick Van Dyke was a talk show host for a local television station in Arizona had some good moments but overall the show was not what it could have been. The show was just too formulaic. In the time of a dominant All in the Family this show did capture some controversial moments, such as their college student sun bringing home an African-American girlfriend, but even that episode was fair, and really had only run of the mill writing. .
There was just no raw inspiration that drove the original and some of the contemporaries of this show, like MASH and All in the Family. It was not horrible to watch but it could have been much better considering the talent it had to work with. The New Dick Van Dyke Show did have decent, but not great ratings, but the show ended when Reiner left, and Dick Van Dyke did not want to do the show without Reiner so after a fair three year run the show came to an end.
