Brown and Welch 10, Movie 0, 24 December 2006

The great Jim Brown (maybe not the best actor, but always looked great on film) dominates the screen with his awesome presence in this very routine action movie. Story is bland, but the cast is really good.

It's hard to believe this was filmed in 1968, not just because of the amazingly explicit sex scenes, but the black and white romantic angle should have been too controversial for its time. It's amazing that the studio executives actually had the guts for this. This makes the film that much more interesting to watch today. I recently read the new Jim Brown biography, and apparently Brown and Welch couldn't stand each other, and she demanded a towel be placed between them during love scenes so she wouldn't actually have to touch him. Naturally this angered Brown, and caused a lot of hostility on the set. All the same, Welch is hot hot hot!!!

The other members of the cast I liked are Fernando Lamas (lotta testosterone there) Dan O'Herlihy and Eric Braeden of Rat Patrol fame. With such great actors, this should have been a much better film, but it's worth watching just the same. Ever notice in the late '60s, there were a lot of movies released that were set during the Mexican revolution? I never figured out what the intense interest in that era was for American audiences.
