Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

A couple (the male and female lead) has sex. They take off their clothes off (he is in his underwear, and her breasts and buttocks are visible). While we only see them kissing passionately for a few moments, it is obvious that they are having sex.

The female lead has a dream--that may well not be a dream--of Satan raping her. The scene is graphic. Other parts of the dream show her naked in the bright sunlight. We see her breasts and bottom. It also includes a view of Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" in which Adam is fully nude.

Violence & Gore

We see a gory close-up of a dead woman surrounded by her own spattered blood--she had just jumped from the seventh floor of an apartment building. We see a similar shot of the corpse in a dream sequence.

Blood is applied to a naked woman (the main character) in a Satanic ritual.

Profanity

Rosemary's Baby has little bad language. The word "shit" is used once. There are a few uses of the word "bitch." Note at the same time that the movie is about Satan worship: many characters express their love of Satan and their hatred for God. In that sense, the film contains much profanity.

The characters drink wine, but not to excess. The main character drinks champagne while she is pregnant. (Note this film was made in 1968 when it was not considered outrageous for a pregnant woman to have a glass of champagne.)

The main character's husband serves her chocolate mousse that he knows his neighbor has drugged. She passes out and is forced to participate in a Satanic rape ritual while half-conscious.

A fair number of scenes feature characters who smoke; though smoking is not an especially prominent activity, especially not for a 1968 film.

There is a brief mention of marijuana towards the beginning of the film, and later on people are seen smoking the illegal drug at a party thrown by a pregnant woman.

We see the bloody aftermath of a suicide by leap.

The main character is raped by Satan in a dream sequence that may not really be a dream.

The main character believes a coven wants her baby for one of their bloody rituals. At the end she learns she has spawned the son of Satan. Rosemary's Baby plays upon the fears and paranoia of its audience--especially pregnant women and those of Christian faith.
