Teehee, De Niro was so funny, 18 August 2001
8/10

People often say 'Robert De Niro has sold his soul to comedy in the last 4 or 5 years'. Well, not really. It may Travis Bickle, Johnny Boy Cavello, Max Cady and Jake LaMotta that he is most widely recognised as playing and he makes a truly astonishing bad-guy-of-many-layers. But 'Greetings' is one of his very first movies and it is certainly a comedy role. And a hilarious one too. He plays peeping-Jon (teehee) convincingly and humourously. The 6-minute static shot of the girl in the window he is directing is very, very funny, and goes in as one of my all time classic comedy scenes. It had me in stitches.

There are though, times where the film drags. A scene at a party for instance where in the foreground we see a man talking about 'Nam and in the background is Jon Reubins (De Niro) looking at a long haired girl in a fur coat drags on and on.

The performances however are excellent. De Niro was absoloutely goregeous at 24 (even with glasses and pornstar moustache) and was wroth the price of this rarity alone. De Palma in my opinion has only done a handful of genuine classics, and this is not one of them. it is though a very funny and interesting, atmospheric film with one or two classicly funny sequences. And a very odd musical score.
