Fantastic Mr. Fox Review

24 November 2009 8:26 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Coming into the theatres in wide release with all the joie de vivre of a little boy trying to please his girlfriend and mother, Fantastic Mr. Fox is yet another trump card in the quality animated and family film derby of 2009. Like all of Wes Anderson's pictures, Fantastic Mr. Fox dances between meaningful and artificial. Often the directors detractors spend too much time on the latter, and perhaps miss the immense character detail revealed in their diorama surroundings and meticulously selected wardrobes. Of course the stop-motion technique selected to animate the film threatens to enhance the artificial, but somehow, the animators have transcended the challenge put to them to tell the story this way. This is simply the right way to do a Wes Anderson Joint (or rather French Cigarillo). Do the simple thought exercise of imagining this film as a 3D CGI or 2D cel animation affair. After »

Good Morning, Oscar: October 7

7 October 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Steve Pond

In today’s roundup of Oscar news ‘n’ notes from around the web, more foreign films come to the Academy, Peter Sarsgaard faces a choice … and have we found the next Oscar host?

A couple of weeks after the last Oscar show, former Academy president Frank Pierson screened a classic film he wrote, “Cool Hand Luke,” for members of the creative community in Iran, as part of a trip to that country by an Academy delegation that also included then-president Sid Ganis and actresses Annette Bening and Alfre Woodard. In a couple of weeks, 10 Iranian filmmaker... »

Our Favorite Montages: The Graduate

18 September 2009 9:32 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When Cinematical staff first discussed the "Montages We Love" series, the image that popped into my head was a classic: the from-bed-to-pool montage in the 1967 film The Graduate. This is my favorite part of the Mike Nichols-directed movie -- yes, even better than the "plastics" line and the bit with Buck Henry and that iconic scene at the end.

The montage is a triumph of clever editing, thanks to Nichols and editor Sam O'Steen, whose other credits include Cool Hand Luke, Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown. It begins with Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) lazing in his parents' swimming pool, then as he leaves the pool and pulls on a shirt, he's revealed to be in a hotel room with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" and then "April, Come She Will" play in the background as Ben shifts from his bed to the pool to the hotel, »

"He Doesn't Have My Permission to Die Yet!": Twelve Evil Movie Wardens

3 September 2009 7:43 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Nobody wants to go to jail. But if you've got to go to jail, just hope you don't do it in the movies. Odds are if you're going to movie jail, you're going to wind up at the mercy of some jerk warden (or captain or superintendent or game show host of a dystopian future) who wants to torture you for kicks.

It happens time and again, most recently in this week's "Gamer" where poor Gerard Butler plays an inmate who finds himself as a running man in a death race against the southern-accented treachery of Michael C. Hall. In honor of "Gamer," here are 12 more corrupt and sadistic movie wardens who could scare anyone straight.

Strother Martin as The Captain

"Cool Hand Luke" (1967)

"What we've got here is... failure to communicate." It's not just the most famous line ever spoken by a movie warden; it's one of the most famous lines in movie history. »

Paul Newman Tribute DVD Set Due in September

1 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It's hard to believe that Paul Newman died almost a year ago. He was the last specimen of a certain breed of actor, as well as being a pretty damn charitable human being. He didn't care about fame and couldn't be bothered by its many trappings, although he absolutely loved the work. Anytime you give great performances over five decades - and he did right up through his TV movie Empire Falls - you don't get there by accident.

Fox Home Entertainment will release a massive Paul Newman Tribute Collection on September 22nd. For the time being, it's just a standard format DVD release, because some of the movies it includes aren't ready for Blu-ray yet. A lot of times, these movie star collections have one good flick and a bunch of B-movies or films you already know you want to avoid. Because stars make movies for different studios, it's tough for Fox to grab, »

Sam Mendes--The Hollywood Interview

Sam Mendes Hits The Road With Away We Go

By

Alex Simon

Sam Mendes is one of the rare hyphenates who remains active directing on the stage and in film, in a time when the two worlds have become largely segregated from one another. Having been lauded with virtually every prestigious award for stage and screen by time he was in his mid-30s, Sam Medes was a wunderkind almost from the start.

Born August 1, 1965 in Reading, Berkshire, England to a university lecturer father and a mother who authored children’s books, Mendes’ parents divorced when he was five. Upon reaching Cambridge University, he quickly fell in love with theater and film, joining the Chichester Festival Theater after graduation in 1987. Soon, he was directing Dame Judi Dench in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, winning the Critics Circle Award for Best Newcomer. Following work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, »

Not So Cool Side Of Newman

17 April 2009 11:32 PM, PDT | NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news »

Was Cool Hand Luke a hot-headed drunk and womanizer?

The Post's Kyle Smith reports Shawn Levy's new bio, "Paul Newman: A Life," out next month from Harmony Books, portrays the late Oscar-winner as a functioning alcoholic who, wearing a bottle opener on a chain around his neck, put away "beer after beer after beer, a case or more a day," followed by the hard stuff, usually scotch.

Onlookers said Newman was seen "drinking beers on the set, in his office, at parties, during interviews, watching TV, getting ready for TV and relaxing after dinner. »
