If filmmakers could be compared to famous poets, then I guess Ingmar Bergman would be Walt Whitman. Arguably one of his best films, PERSONA is a total mind blow and poetic at the same time. His existentialist, realism, and artistic integrity makes him one of the greatest filmmakers ever.
Sister Alma (Bibi Andersson) is a naive young nurse left to take care of famous actress Elisabet Volger (Liv Ullman). Elisabet is in a mental hospital, and will not say a word at all. So Sr. Alma takes the beautiful actress to her cabin to hopefully learn more and grab a piece of her rather fragile mind. But who is more insane?
PERSONA is a film with 90% long shots and minimalistic sound. Yet you cannot seem to take your eyes off of the screen. Intertwined is random montages of equally disturbing imagery. The camera-work is magnificent, just like any Ingmar Bergman film. Watching this film, you can really see the influence this would have on filmmakers such as David Lynch, Guy Maddin, and even Woody Allen. Not nearly as good as WILD STRAWBERRIES or THE SEVENTH SEAL but it is worth every penny.
