Harper (1966)

Seven films starring Hollywood's blue-eyed boy Paul Newman debut on DVD in this box set. The cool detective thriller Harper (1966), Newman's first turn as Ross Macdonald's detective Lew Archer (he was renamed Lew Harper for the film) is also available separately (see Cult and Classic for more details. The other six are exclusive to the set, including the Harper sequel The Drowning Pool (1975), co-starring Joanne Woodward as a New Orleans oil heiress who hires Harper for a blackmail case that turns much more dangerous. Tony Franciosa, Coral Browne, Andy Robinson, Murray Hamilton, and a young Melanie Griffith co-star. Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) was Newman's second feature, but his portrayal of middleweight boxing champion Rocky Graziano was his breakthrough performance. Directed by Robert Wise, is co-stars Pier Angeli, Everett Sloane, Eileen Heckart, and Sal Mineo. He plays Billy the Kid in Arthur Pennn's The Left Handed Gun (1958), a landmark psychological western with a twitchy method performance from Newman. The set also features The Young Philadelphians (1959), a glossy melodrama co-starring Barbara Rush, Brian Keith, Alexis Smith, Billie Burke, John Williams, and Robert Vaughn; the buddy comedy Pocket Money (1972), co-starring Lee Marvin and Strother Martin; and the spy thriller The Mackintosh Man (1973), co-starring Dominique Sanda and James Mason and directed by John Huston.

(1966) Paul Newman is cool and charismatic as Ross MacDonald’s detective Lew Archer (renamed Lew Harper for the film) in the adaptation of MacDonald’s novel "The Moving Target," scripted by future Oscar winner William Goldman. Directed by Jack Smight, the modern murder mystery takes Harper through contemporary sixties Los Angeles and a colorful cast of suspects and other characters, played by Lauren Bacall, Arthur Hill, Robert Wagner, Shelley Winters, and Julie Harris with Janet Leigh as his estranged wife and Strother Martin as a religious con man.
