Win Fawlty Towers Special Edition Remastered DVD Set – Winners!

9 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Here are the winners of our Fawlty Towers contest:

Eric Tomlinson – Morgantown, WVDeeAnn Szymanski – Pottstown, PADebbie Heddington – London, Ont, CanadaMatthew Casale – Greece, NY

Thanks to everyone who entered, and don’t forget we’ve got a cool Star Trek giveaway going on right now!

Are you a fan of Fawlty Towers? Ever even heard of the show? Well it’s where John Cleese headed for a brief time after Monty Python back in 1975 and 1979. The show only ran for 12 episodes, but every single one of them is hysterical, and many are funny enough to bring tears to your eyes (that’s not PR, that’s my opinion). Fawlty Towers also starred Prunella Scales, Connie Both and Andrew Sachs.

Well it’s the 30th anniversary of the show and the episodes are being re-released in a special edition, remastered DVD set – and we have four (4) copies to give away!

Roddenberry on list of TV Hall of Fame inductees

13 hours ago | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

This might sound more overdue than According to Jim's cancellation, but one of TV's greatest creators is getting the Hall of Fame treatment.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry will join the ranks of the Television Academy's Hall of Fame next year at a special induction ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Other inductees include Candice Bergen, production and art director Charles Lisanby, announcer Don Pardo, Tom and Dick Smothers and game show producer Bob Stewart. Is there anyone that they left off the list?

News: Trek Creator becomes part of TV Hall of Greats

16 hours ago | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

TrekMovie.com notes that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry is being inducted into the TV Hall of Fame. Sponsored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Hall of Fame honors those who have "....challenged and shaped popular culture, changed television for the better and entertained us royally by doing so," they said in a press release.

In regards to Roddenberry,

The legacy of two-time Primetime Emmy Award-nominee Gene Roddenberry continues to flourish as the “Star Trek” franchise he created has reached 10 theatrical movies, seven television series and numerous merchandising and ancillary businesses–all of which maintain the late producer’s vision of the future. Often affectionately referred to as the “Great Bird of the Galaxy,” Roddenberry led a life as colorful and exciting as almost any high adventure fiction. It wasn’t until 1966, when Roddenberry created and produced the original “Star Trek,” that he found his voice in Hollywood. »

'Star Trek' DVD: Prepare for a deleted-scene geek-out

16 hours ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Good news, Trek fans. The wait is almost over. Just seven more days until J.J. Abrams' two-disc special edition of Star Trek comes to DVD. Naturally, that means the usual loving assortment of behind-the-scenes extras, including a commentary track from Abrams and his producing and writing teams. But the nuggets you'll want to check out first are the nine deleted scenes. If you can't wait, here's a breakdown of the lost goodies. Scene 1: Spock's birth. This was originally supposed to be the first shot in the movie. A touching and tender scene set on the Vulcan home planet »

Facebook Hijackers Speak Out About... School Project?

17 hours ago | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Hundreds of Facebook groups were turned into zombies on Tuesday in an attempt to display just how vulnerable social networkers can be. Using a design flaw in Facebook's groups feature, a group called Control Your Info found Facebook groups where the administrator had stepped down, joined the group, claimed the vacant administrator spot (which is open to any group member when the administrator leaves) and changed the name to Control Your Info.

"When you're admin of a group, you can basically do anything you want with it," the group's Web page states. "You can change it's name, and the groups members won't even get a notification of it. You can send mails to all members and edit info." An evildoer could seize a widowed group (such as the hypothetical group "Sweet Valley High LoOoOoVeS Robert Pattison," for instance) and change the name to something offensive (like "The Coalition for Pedophile's »

Hallmark Offering Really Nerdy Christmas Tree Ornaments

20 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Well, it's that time of the year again -- time to wait until the very last minute to buy presents for your loved ones in order to solidify the fact that you'll be waiting on insanely long lines next to people who don't shower and like to scream at their misbehaving kids about once every 10 seconds. Or at least that's what I'll be doing this year. One thing I always look forward to, though, is heading out on a cold winter's night to purchase a way-too-expensive Christmas tree for my living room ... and then decorating it while consuming some nice tasty beverages that may or may not be of the alcoholic variety.

But when you're a movie geek like me, you want to decorate that tree with tons of really random movie references so that your family can come over and be all like, "Um, is that the car from Ghostbusters hanging on your tree? »

Good Morning, Oscar: November 10

By Steve Pond

In this morning’s roundup of Oscar news ‘n’ notes from around the web, Kate Winslet is worth $100 million and Harvey Weinstein straightens out “A Single Man.”

Kris Tapley predicts all 24 winners at next March’s Oscars. He’s nuts to do this, of course, but his choices seem pretty sensible if you accept that the “Precious” momentum is going to continue. (I don’t think I do.) He has that film winning best picture, actress and supporting actress, plus film editing; “Nine” and “Star Trek” taking three ea... »

Goyer has doubts over Magneto, but see master of magnetism in two new trailers

22 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Last Month, producer Lauren Shuler Donner indicated that the prequel X-Men Origins: Magneto was "at the back of the queue" of potential X-Men movies and said the film may not even get made.

David Goyer, who reworked Sheldon Turner's screenplay for the film and is set to direct, has spoken about the project to MTV and echoes Donner's views.

Goyer, who is also the showrunner of FlashForward, said: "I tend to agree with her.

"[Fox is] still trying to figure out what they want to do, whether or not they'll do a different X-Men movie next or another Wolverine movie next. If they want to make Magneto, that's awesome.

"In the meantime, I'm just going to move on with my other projects."

He added: "Even taking FlashForward aside, I'm booked up for another year and a half. I have no complaints."

In the meantime, we can console ourselves with two new Magneto video clips, »

Glimpse Star Trek's Abandoned Mos Eisley Cantina Scene

9 November 2009 10:30 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I loved Jj Abrams Star Trek reboot, but if there.s a bad scene in the movie.s Kirk.s rather lame chase sequence with an alien monster on an ice planet. It just doesn.t fit in with anything else that.s going on in the film and, maybe there.s a reason for that. Originally, they had something else in mind. IO9 has concept art from the sequence they.d originally planned for Jim Kirk after being marooned by his shipmates. The planet was supposed to be a desert planet, and more than that a populated desert planet where he.d encounter alien traders and smugglers. Think Mos Eisley from Star Wars and that seems to be the direction they were thinking in. Check out the concept (more at IO9) Pretty great right? Infinitely superior to the somewhat lame, CGI monster Kirk encounters instead. Imagine if he.d »

Walmart, Target and Amazon Slash DVD Prices

9 November 2009 4:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you are the type of person who likes to get their Christmas shopping done early, I've got some good news for you, because now is your chance to buy some seriously cheap DVDs. Variety is reporting that the online stores for Walmart, Target, and Amazon, have gotten into a DVD pricing war and passing those savings on to you. But don't worry, these aren't your usual discount bin selections, instead, big name titles like Star Trek, Night and The Museum 2, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be going for the low price of only $10 each.

It all started when Walmart announced last Thursday that they would be offering titles like Angels & Demons, Julie & Julia, and Terminator: Salvation at a lower price (but you were only guaranteed the discount price if you shopped online). The reason for the discount according to Walmart was to, "help families holiday shop during this difficult economic environment. »

Moon: Blu-ray review and details of all the DVD and Blu-ray features

9 November 2009 4:11 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Amid a summer of explosive spectacle - there can barely be a stick of dynamite left unlit in Hollywood - David Bowie's son Duncan Jones surprised everyone with his directorial debut: An old-school sci-fi film called Moon.

Made for just $5million by Liberty Films and released by Sony Pictures Classics, Moon lands on DVD and Blu-ray next Monday, November 16. The new website for the film has now gone live (and you can see it here).

This psychological drama - which was on a limited theatrical release - stars Sam Rockwell (Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, Frost/Nixon) and features the voice of Kevin Spacey as a computer called Gerty.

Rockwell is Sam Bell, a Lunar Industries worker supervising the mechanical extraction of the clean fuel helium-3 from rocks on the surface of the moon.

Inside the Ied Battle Drill: How Hollywood Is Prepping Soldiers for Roadside Attacks

9 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

"So," the smiling publicist asked cheerily, "do you want to get blown up, or not?"

Not a question I routinely get asked when reporting stories. But nothing about my visit to this non-descript office park about 40 miles north of Los Angeles could be described as routine. Here, in the shadow of the dozen or so roller coasters of Six Flags Magic Mountain, a team of more than a dozen Hollywood creatives and theme park engineers are debuting their latest creation. Except this team is working not for the hottest Hollywood studio but for the Department of Defense. And this is no blockbuster film. It's a simulated Ied attack.

The Ied--an improvised explosive device--is the deadly centerpiece of the most common attack against U.S. soldiers: the roadside ambush. A system that could accurately train soldiers to anticipate what that attack might feel like could save a lot of lives. "These »

The Most Expensive Cinematic Risk of All Time

9 November 2009 11:54 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It’s become an axiom in Hollywood today that the runaway budgets are making studios more and more risk-averse. Then again, 2009 has been a very strange year. Paramount spent $150 million on Star Trek, which not only was stigmatized as a very uncool show, but was dead in the water as a viable franchise. Warner Bros. spent $100 million turning a short children’s book into a full length film without it becoming a simple children’s story, cute yet forgettable. And now 20th Century Fox is spending what could amount to $500 million on Avatar (once you include robust marketing costs and investments from Cameron and other producers, the reported $230 million film doubles in price). The New York Times has an article about the specifics of the film. The strange thing is that, besides the technology and the man in the director’s chair, there is very little that’s instantly bankable about the film. »

Sr Picks [Video]: X-Men Origins: Magneto Concept Trailer

8 November 2009 8:03 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of the many potential X-Men movies pushed into early development after X-Men 3: The Last Stand was an origins solo film for the master of magnetism, Magneto, played of course by the talented sir Ian McKellen in the X-Men trilogy.

I was always skeptical of a Magneto origins film, thinking it wouldn’t be as bankable as many projects touted, but this trailer (using X-men trilogy scenes and Star Trek music) does make it seem pretty epic. That being said, a lot of that awesomeness comes from the music.

Check out this fan-made concept trailer by YouTube user silverlightsaber after the jump.

The only issue here is that it presents Magneto when he’s older and we know the origin film would have to be about him when he’s young, learning his powers, defining his beliefs, working with professor X to start the school, build cerebro, etc. This »

Walmart, Target and Amazon are Selling New DVDs for $10

8 November 2009 10:17 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Citing the (how to put this politely?) languid economy, Walmart.com cut prices on its pre-order DVDs down to $10. With free shipping. And not just on the Criterion Blu-Ray Release of “Cool Runnings.” All the summer’s big hits-”Angels & Demons,” “Terminator: Salvation” and “Julie & Julia” are all available for bargain bin prices. Target and Amazon quickly followed suit and added titles like “Harry Potter,” “Night at the Museum 2″ and “Star Trek” to the list. Be advised, however, because Variety is reporting this pricing is only available online and only until the movies are officially released on DVD. But you don’t know that because you have already left this site, haven’t you?
