I'm sick to death of studio fanboy marketing. It pisses me off when some studio jerks throw out clips -- or, even worse, a first reel -- of some upcoming movie. We're supposed to get all excited and spread good word of mouth to build marketing demand for their film. And then -- the coup de grâce of this sucker play -- we get to pay full admission to see the entire film once it's released.
No thanks.
One of my favorite studio marketing ploys happened a couple years ago, when the first season of Star Trek was remastered with new optical effects and released on high-def video. To promote the box set, the studio did limited theatrical showings of "The Menagerie," the two-part episode that recycled footage from the unaired (and Kirk-less) Star Trek pilot. Sure, it was a marketing event to support the boxed-set release, but it was

Rock band Status Quo and 'Star Trek' actor Patrick Stewart have been honoured in Britain's Queen Elizabeth's New Year's honours list. The annual list shows who is to be knighted and receive various civilian awards, including Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Most Excellent Member of the British Empire (MBE). After being told they are to receive OBEs, Status Quo frontmen Rick Parfitt, 60, and Francis Rossi, 61, said they were delighted. Rossi said: "Us, of all people! I'm not sure that we deserve it, but f**k it, I'm so made up it's ridiculous. "You hear about people refusing them because it's not rock'n'roll but that's a d***head approach. Rick is even more excited about it -

These were the top five science-fiction, fantasy and comicbook movies this year that set my pulse racing. Which were yours?
In this season of lists, I thought I'd run down my top 10 science-fiction, fantasy and comicbook movies of the year. Easy peasy, or so I imagined, until I got to flick No 6 and realised there have actually not been that many films this year which I could put hand on heart and say I've absolutely loved. So here without further ado, are Week in Geek's top five movies of the year, followed by the five I've least enjoyed.
1. Watchmen
Zack Snyder's epic adaptation of the classic graphic novel attracted as many brickbats as it did plaudits from the critics. Those who hated the film pointed out that you couldn't really "get it" without having read the original Alan Moore comic about masked vigilantes living in an alternate 1984. Yet the

Star Trek legend Patrick Stewart and Status Quo musicians Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi have been named in the Queen's New Year Honours list. As expected, 69-year-old Stewart has received a knighthood for his services to drama, while Parfitt and Rossi have been recognised for their contributions to music and charity. West Yorkshire-born Stewart confirmed that he is "very proud" of the accolade, adding: "This is an honour that embraces those actors, directors and creative teams who have in these recent years helped fill my life with inspiration, companionship and sheer fun." Meanwhile, Parfitt argued that he and Rossi deserved their honours, explaining: "I thought there had been a chance that we may have got something but I had kind of given up hoping. Patrick Stewart was knighted in the New Year's honours list. The UK Shakespearean actor famed for Star Trek and his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation is 69. New Zealand director Peter Jackson was also on the list as the island nation brought back its British honours list. Formula One world champion Jenson Button was awarded the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). The veteran rock musicians Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi, who founded rock band Status Quo in the 1960s, also received Officer of the British Empires (OBEs). Bankers were reported missing from the list following their loss of status in the crumbling of

Many of you will know him for playing Xavier in the X-Men trilogy, others for his wonderful and long serving work in the Royal Shakespeare Company but for me, Patrick Stewart will always be Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the head honcho in the long running and arguably most successful Star Trek series, Star Trek: The Next Generation which also spawned four feature films with the same cast.
Hundreds of hours of my life (I dread to think how many but they were all worth it!) have been clocked up watching him say, the famous line ‘Make it So’. The Queen of England has acknowledged Stewart’s contribution to the entertainment industry in the latest honours list and this post is simply to express my delight for him and all his fans who read this site.
Sir, we salute you!

Every site you go to these days has a list of their top 10 best movies of the year. But how many time can you look at slight variations of the same lists you only semi-agree with?
Besides, ranking entire movies is a big job. After much debate on the subject, we here at Screen Rant have decided that, in the end, a year in movies is perhaps best defined by specific movie moments that are now and forever burned into our collective memory.
So, without further ado, here are our picks for those 2009 movie moments which audiences collectively remember as being unforgettably awesome, hilarious, moving, inspiring or are otherwise just plain enjoyable…
(By the way, there will be some spoilers in the items below since all the movies in this list have been out for a while.)
.
10. The Kidnapping Scene in Taken
Taken is a movie that had many standout moments.

With 2009 and the ‘aughts’ portion of the new millennium coming to a close, Chris and Matt decided to forgo the usual news and commentary for this special episode of The Flickcast and instead, focus on some of the great movies, tv, comics, games and all things geek that were the best of 2009. In addition, the boys also made some picks of one or two of the highlights of the entire ‘aughts’ decade.
Some of the topics discussed include Chris and Matt’s favorite movies of 2009 such as Star Trek, Inglourious Basterds, Zombieland and Drag Me to Hell as well as some of their favorite 2009 tv shows including Community, Cougar Town and continuing series such as Fringe and The Big Bang Theory. The boys also made some picks of their favorite comics and games of the year including Blackest Night, Old Man Logan, Modern Warfare 2 and Ultimate Alliance 2.

Top 25 Movies of 2009
#1 - 10
Here we are, time for all of us to reveal our top ten films of 2009. Many of you wondered why I only allowed you to pick five films in the nominations poll I started on Monday. Well, everything was in an effort to make sure you all held your lists until today as I reveal my top ten favorite films of 2009 and hope you will add your thoughts on my list as well as share your individual lists of 10, 15, 20 or however many films from the year that was. We have only a couple of days left before 2010 shuts the door on what I thought was a rather enjoyable year in film once you brush away a few of those lousy blockbusters that weren't.
Before I go any further, let me once again share the schedule as I promised I would include with each posting on Monday:

As we wind down the final moments of 2009 the scarcity of news stories is itself becoming a news story. Thankfully the team at Sci Fi Wire haven't loaded up on champagne yet: they found a pleasing YouTube video made by a group of niche Japanese modelbuilders that take flying to a whole new level.
The Starfleet Yokosuka Drydocks team made a replica model of the refitted Constitution class Enterprise from the first six Star Trek films. Sure, the model looks absolutely faithful to the big screen version right down to its running lights, but where the Yokosuka gang made their true impact is by outfitting their Enterprise with real thrusters and then putting it into a large swimming pool. The result is a "flying" Enterprise, one that can bank and rise because of its aquatic environment. It's a kinda restful feeling to watch their watership fly around inside the pool.

From the start, the 2009 forecast seemed a little Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, but when Amelia took us flying Up In The Air, past the blinding Whiteout, we could see A New Moon. A Bright Star rose above the horizon of the Red Cliff and we found ourselves on The Road to some Precious moments in film. Those Inglourious Basterds saved us from the claws of Wolverine…he even tried to Drag Me To Hell! The night Watchmen kept a close eye on us as we spent a second Night In The Museum, saw the Dawn Of The Dinosaurs, and another Ice Age. We became Astro Boy, rocketed off to Planet 51, and witnessed the epic Monsters vs. Aliens battle. Some were slyly introduced to The Fantastic Mr. Fox, many cheered as both Ponyo and Coraline attempted to save their families and the world, and we sailed with Max

El Guapo's Top Ten Movies Of 2009!
Now that the year has come to a close, let's take a look at what I thought were the best movies of 2009. And believe it or not, 2009 had a lot of great movies. There were dramas, comedies, science fiction films, pretty much anything and everything one could hope for came out this year. From giant robot movies to tender love stories to comedies that had you laughing until you got a hernia, 2009 was one of the better years in cinema.Granted, I have not seen every movie that came out this year. I missed Up in the Air, Anti-Christ, A Simple Man and the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. So don't get all bent out of shape when you don't see those films on my list. Like last year's list I'm sure there will be some choices on here that will have you scratching

Martin Campbell Is Putting Together Award Winning Crew for The Green Lantern Production Team

A regular conversation that occurs between me and my blog buddies is how Martin Campbell, the director of The Green Lantern, plans to tackle the production of one of the most unique comic book adaptations ever. For those who are unaware the look and style of Gl is that of Iron Man meets Star Trek in terms of tone and action (it spends time between space and Earth) but there is the fantasy elements that put it as sort of a Lord of the Rings in space thus giving it that uniqueness that most other comic book adaptation don’t have.
Even though Martin Campbell is the director he has to rely on very talented members of the production to create and design these worlds. Well now Superhero Hype is reporting that many of the key crew members that are already on board, and there’s no lack of Oscars among them.

In the 24th Century of Star Trek, the social conventions around clothing, uniforms, and appropriateness will be far saner than they are today.
Recently, a few Trek fans decided to get a jump on that future.

Congrats go out to those of you who painstakingly watched the New Moon trailer, like, 10,000 times in a row, because you helped it become the most watched trailer of 2009! Yahoo Movies has released their annual list of the most-watched trailers of the year, and coming in at number one is, not surprisingly, The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
At a close second was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, followed by 2012, Terminator Salvation, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Star Trek, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Avatar and then Pixar’s Up. Nowhere to be found on this list was Where the Wild Things Are, which was probably the most critically celebrated trailer of the year, capped off by a magical remix of Arcade Fire’s “Wake...

Since it seems like I have to watch every trailer that comes out in a given year, I feel it only fair to highlight the ones that were worth my precious two-and-a-half minutes. A good trailer can throw a movie high on someone’s must-see list or change indifference into excitement. I hesitate to call them art not because I don’t believe the term technically fits (it does), but because “art” is such a loaded word. Still, when you forego Mr. Movie Voice, showing the entire movie, and edit together a piece that’s pretty damn cool in its own right, then you’re worthy of some attention.
Hit the jump to start the countdown.
Two additional notes: I’ve also included the names of the music used in the trailers for those that want to buy the tracks. Also, to qualify only the trailer had to come out this year,

Pan's Labyrinth is named film of the decade: Do you agree?

It's not only nearly the end of the year but the end of a decade and, as a result, time to look back over the movies released during that period.
Over on Metacritic, a site that compiles reviews of films and other media, there is a list of the top releases of the decade, according to the scores of leading professional film critics.
The top overall movie was Guillermo del Toro's excellent fantasy horror film Pan's Labyrinth from 2006, which has an overall score of 98 out of 100. Made for $19million, it earned $83million worldwide which, although not the massive heights reached by Hollywood blockbusters, is definitely a success for a Spanish language project, especially since it was not on full release at all cinemas in the UK.
The rest of the top five consisted of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (score: 97), Ratatouille (96), Spirited Away (94) and The Hurt Locker (94).
It's worth mentioning

A few movie-related cheers and jeers got tossed around the Twitter Report's feed over the last 24 hours. Joe Hill seems to have been catching up on his "Green Hornet" news, and both Michel Gondry and Anvil have his approval. Bryan Lee O'Malley, meanwhile, sounded a little skeptical of Ellen Page's role in the new Christopher Nolan film "Inception."
In sports/comics crossover conversation, Brian Michael Bendis noticed the trending Vikings topic last night that was spurred by the Chicago Bears victory over Minnesota. He hoped that "Viking" writer Ivan Brandon would notice as well. Check out all of those retweets after the jump along with a birthday wish I endorse going out to Jeff Katz and a memorial shout out to Star Trek actress Majel Barrett, which I also support.
