The Best Non-Dysfunctional Movie Families ... in Honor of Thanksgiving

26 November 2009 6:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In honor of Thanksgiving, we're recalling one of our favorite turkey day-themed posts from last year.

By: Jette Kernion

A few years ago, I wrote a Cinematical Seven on my favorite dysfunctional families in films. Everyone has a crazy messed-up movie family they love, whether it's the Hoovers in Little Miss Sunshine or the Bullocks in My Man Godfrey or the Corleones in the Godfather saga. I thought that this year, it would be fun to make a list of families that got along, worked together, and supported one another. You know, happy families ... but not dull, one-dimensional bundles of endless cheer.

It's a lot more difficult to find seven movies with happy-but-not-sappy families than it is to find the screwed-up kind, especially if you are looking for something more interesting than the Cleavers. Since I'm visiting my relatives for the Thanksgiving holidays, I asked them for suggestions. They were all very helpful, »

The hills were alive - with the sound of fans rushing to get a photo of Tom Cruise. The actor popped up on the main shopping street of Salzburg - the Austrian city where The Sound of Music was filmed - shortly after his Gulfstream IV jet landed there on Thursday. Dressed in a blue and gray plaid flannel shirt, Cruise signed autographs on the cobblestone street during a break from filming Knight and Day, a romantic action-comedy with Cameron Diaz. On Friday, Cruise shot scenes running over roofs in the city's old town. Next up: a helicopter chase.Although »

An Evening With Christopher Plummer, Film Forum, New York November 30

21 November 2009 10:24 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Cinema Retro has received the following press release from The Film Forum:

A tribute to actor Christopher Plummer will be held at Film Forum on Monday, November 30 at 7:30. Mr. Plummer will appear in person to discuss his long stage, screen and television career. Admission for this special event is $25, $15 for Film Forum members. Tickets will be available online Monday, November 23.

In his immensely entertaining new memoir, Christopher Plummer describes how “this young bilingual wastrel, incurably romantic, spoiled rotten, tore himself away from the ski slopes to break into the big bad world of theatre, not from the streets up but from an Edwardian living room down.” A Canadian (not English, as is often assumed), Plummer made his stage debut at 18 in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline over 60 years ago. As a super-star of the Broadway and London stage, Plummer has played most of the great classic roles: Hamlet, Lear, Macbeth, Iago, »

Inside track on the Oscars' supporting actor race

18 November 2009 11:22 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

At this point on the derby track, with many films like "Invictus" and "The Lovely Bones" still unseen, it appears that there are three Oscar front-runners for best supporting actor: Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds"), Christopher Plummer ("The Last Station") and Alec Baldwin ("It's Complicated"). Waltz has been ahead for the last few months and may remain there, but remember this category is notoriously known as the veteran's achievement award (Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine," James Coburn in "Affliction"). Two notable veterans stand out. Plummer starred in Oscar best pictures "The Sound of Music" and "A Beautiful Mind" and won many industry honors (three Emmys plus several film critics' awards), but he's never been nominated... »

Shelean Newman: One of Music City's Favorite Actresses May Become America's Favorite Chanteuse

12 November 2009 8:06 PM, PST | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

Shelean Newman, known to Nashville audiences from her storied performances on area stages in productions of such musicals as The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Evita and more, has recently released her second CD for GrandVista Music entitled Snowfall, a collection of some of the season's most apropos songs, along with some surprising selections that fit perfectly into our idea of what the winter holiday season is all about. Snowfall is a follow-up, if you will, to Newman's exquisitely sung first collection for the record label, titled appropriately enough Anything Goes, a collection of standards and showtunes from such composers as Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, Johnny Mercer and George and Ira Gershwins. »

Glee star Chris Colfer has claimed that his role on the show was written especially for him. The 19-year-old, who plays gay high school student Kurt Hummel, said that he originally auditioned for the part of Artie, which eventually went to Kevin McHale. Colfer explained that executive producer Ryan Murphy asked him if he had ever been in a production of The Sound Of Music, which is how his tailor-made character came about. He told TV Guide: "I told him I had played Kurt in The Sound of Music when I was younger. The next thing I knew, (more) »

Birthday Suits: Immortal Beloveds

8 November 2009 6:27 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Who needs holidays? Make your own with the birthdays of movie people.

Parker, Oleg and Vlad the Impaler (as interpreted by Gary Oldman)

Today's Birthdays 11/08

1431 Vlad the Impaler would have turned 578 years old today if not for that stake through the heart. To be accurate, his exact birthday is unknown but sometimes he's listed on this date which probably has something to do with...

1847 Bram Stoker who wrote the original Dracula, which gave Vlad the immortality that he had mythically already won as the original nosferatu... vampyr. The cinema loves him harder and deeper than Lucy Harker ever could.

1900 Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind. She didn't have to impale anyone or renounce heaven to achieve immortality. She just had to write one mammoth book. The movie based on her novel is still the highest grossing film of all time when adjusted for inflation. One of only four films »

Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre Presents The Producers 9/11-11/7

7 November 2009 12:30 AM, PST | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

The show broke countless box office records and won every theatre award imaginable, including 12 Tonys in 2001, more than any production in history. It began as a movie, made its way to Broadway, and then found itself back on the silver screen. Now, the smash-hit musical comedy The Producers comes to the Frederick stage for the very first time!

From 2001 to 2007, the hottest tickets on the Great White Way were for Mel Brooks' first musical, which was based on his 1968 film about a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant who come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive Springtime For Hitler), hiring a director, »

Theatre for the New City Presents Jim Farmer's The Supper Club Of Lost Causes, 11/6 - 11/29

Certain small, old towns of the Northeast are full of time warps. People crossing the street can seem like they sprang from decades past and certain buildings are forgotten relics, unseen and unnoticed. As a boy, playwright/director Jim Farmer saw "The Sound of Music" in a large, decrepit movie theater in Hawley, Pa, near Lake Wallenpaupack. The movie palace's sad and spooky overtones brought back feelings he had as a younger child, when he was taken by his parents to a supper club in Bayonne NJ, his hometown. Surrounded by its scratchy jazz band and eerie, wrinkled comics, Farmer knew that he wasn't experiencing a "Jack Benny Show" of the past but a David Lynch moment of the future. »

Michael Jackson has earned $90 million since he died

28 October 2009 4:50 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Michael Jackson has earned $90 million since he died.

The late 'Thriller' singer - who passed away from acute Propofol intoxication on June 25 - came third in Forbes.com's annual Top-Earning Dead Celebrities list with the huge financial haul.

Michael was the highest ranking deceased singer, after bringing in the enormous sum from radio play, royalties from album sales, rights to his name and royalties from his stake in the Sony/Atv music catalogue.

Since Michael's shock passing there have also been numerous sales of memorabilia, iconic outfits and even a lock of his hair.

Forbes Senior Editor Matthew Miller said: "The money might be drying up in Hollywood, but there's still plenty of cash being made in the graveyard. The earning power of dead celebrities is more powerful than ever before."

Elvis Presley dropped down from first position last year to fourth this time round with earnings of $55 million. »
