The "Dollars Trilogy" Free on Hulu

A quick heads-up for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood fans. All three of their "Man with No Name" westerns are now up on Hulu for free viewing. Hulu is only going to have these movies up until the end of November, so don't waste time, pilgrim. You can watch all three films right here.

A Fistful of Dollars originally followed the trend of remaking Akira Kurosawa's samurai films as westerns. I say trend, but really there was only, what, The Magnificent Seven? Fistful uses the plot of Kurosawa's Yojimbo as its premise, then reshapes it into Leone's own signature style. Then came the pseudo-sequel, For a Few Dollars More. Leone never meant for the three films to be a trilogy, but it just turned out that way due to Eastwood's same look and acting style in all three.  The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is a prequel of sorts, »

I think the mania for Sergio Leone is stronger than it's ever been. It's undoubtedly due to the championing of Quentin Tarantino, and films like Sukiyaki Western Django and The Good, the Bad and the Weird, which are driving fans to seek out where they borrowed their serapes and squints from. There also seems to simply be a hunger for good adventure stories and rugged antiheroes, and there's no better place to get sated than Leone's films. If you feel like spending two hours in the broiling sun with a man who'll shoot you as soon as look at you, then you'll love today's free flick: For A Few Dollars More.

For A Few Dollars More might be my favorite of the Dollars Trilogy. I love them all on their own merits, but this installment stands on its own (I hate saying it, but Fistful is decidedly less cool after »

Inglourious Basterds Directed by Quentin Tarantino Normally I approach a new Tarantino film with caution because more often than not, due to his fame and talent, his movies are severely hyped in the months leading up to their release; they are promoted with so much zeal and accompanied by so many industry buzz-words that I usually end up being slightly disappointed with the final product. It was the case with Kill Bill 1-2 and Death Proof. For Inglourious Basterds, however, I purposefully avoided reading early reviews (it has been screening at various festivals since Cannes) so that I could go in with a fresh mind and the opportunity to truly judge it for myself. A bruised and battered stalwart of the late night cinema circuit, the Spaghetti Western held a bastardised, custom-job revolver to the head of its inferior American cousin and relieved it of both its basic premise and last shred of decency; joyously blurring the line between right and wrong and leaving morality swinging from a ragged noose in the hot, desert sun.

The Spaghetti Western was an Italian phenomenon, mostly financed by Rome's famous Cinecitta Studios, although there were plenty of co-productions with other Euro countries like Spain and Germany, even stretching as far afield as Israel if you count the soul-sapping awfulness that is God's Gun. One man is responsible for popularising the Spaghetti Western, Sergio Leone. 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' Comes to Blu-Ray

Last night, I was thisclose to picking up A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More on one of those bargain two-movie DVD things. I didn't, even though it's a bargain, because they really deserve a big, splashy DVD re-release. Plus I already have Fistful. But I wondered about these Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood classics being released on Blu-ray, and what do you know...

On May 12th, MGM and Fox Home Video will re-issue The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly on Blu-ray. And if you get it through the Fox store (where you can currently pre-order it), you can practically steal one of the great westerns of all time, and certainly the most influential one in the last 40 years. How does $23.99 sound? What a great deal.
