Amusing Italian comedy - above average., 4 May 2000
5/10

Although the production values are terrible (typically bizarre music of the period and washed out color), this is a droll romp that is rather quite amusing. Our hero is impotent unless there is a very real element of danger present in his wooing of women. Mastroianni is perfectly cast. The Original Story and Screenplay were deservedly Oscar nominated. Most amusing is the lecherous and bizarre psychiatrist who tries to convince Mastroianni to give up women - the good doctor has an agenda. Watch him obsessively sharpen pencils when talking of Marcello's impotency. Also the last sequence of seduction in the decaying antique collector's villa is a hoot. The trial for murder where Marcello defends himself against the constant barrage of the fair sex is very well done. All in all - a delight despite the poor film stock and scoring. Out of print on video, you may still find it in your local video store.
