New to Me: The Black Hole, The Incredible Mr. Limpet and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

23 December 2009 2:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If "they don't make 'em like they used to" isn't officially a cliché yet, then it soon will be. Sure, it's about as accurate a maxim as they come -- times inevitably change, and culture as well -- but while it usually laments an era bygone, it often ignores the fact that change has often been equal to a sense of improvement and progress.

The 1954 musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (henceforth Sbsb), the 1964 cartoon The Incredible Mr. Limpet and the 1979 sci-fi adventure The Black Hole are each fair representations of entertainment from their time periods, little capsules of innocence the likes of which are unmatched today, but these passing years suggest that maybe they were just right for just then, best left to steep in nostalgia...

An Open Letter to Johnny Depp

23 July 2009 7:31 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Dear Johnny Depp, Has it really come to this? An article in Tuesday's Hollywood Reporter talked about the fact that, while you've got Public Enemies in theaters and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in the can (along with The Rum Diaries and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus), none of your other prospective projects was coming together. Then it started listing them -- and the first title on the list was a remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpet, a 1964 movie in which Don Knotts played a man who was transformed into a talking fish. And a new Lone Ranger film -- in which you would play Tonto. And a remake of the vampire soap opera Dark Shadows. And Pirates of the Caribbean 4. I recognize that Hollywood ran out of original ideas years ago -- and that it's suffering some sort of massive brain »

Lima Loves Limpet

13 June 2009 12:46 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The Incredible Mr. Limpet, a hybrid live action and animated feature made in 1964 that starred the late Don Knotts, is getting the remake treatment. Kevin Lima, director of incredibly awesome Disney movies like A Goofy Movie and Enchanted, swims himself into the helm of the family comedy. Despite it not being completely out of the ordinary to see an older film get a more modern take on its tale, this particular piece of property has been juggled around for awhile. From Mike Judge to Robin Williams, this cinematic puppy was itching to be remade.

Producing will be the likes of Paula Weinstein (Blood Diamond), Bill Gerber (Gran Torino), James Lassiter (Seven Pounds), Chris Chase (Enchanted) and Akiva Goldsman (Jonah Hex). The film will be under the sparkling supervision of Warner Bros. Pictures, taking up another part of Lima’s schedule along with the live action Tom Thumb and Candyland movies. »

Kevin Lima to Helm 'The Incredible Mr. Limpet'

12 June 2009 1:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Someone out there will undoubtedly scream "sacrilegious!" or at least "Lame!", but I've always wanted to see The Incredible Mr. Limpet remade. It's a favorite film of both my parents, and so my sister and I loved it too.

Remake talk has been floating around for years, with everyone from Robin Williams to Jim Carrey being attached to star (I always thought Lee Evans would have been a good pick), and the talents of Mike Judge behind the camera. Now The Hollywood Reporter says that Kevin Lima is the next to try and get it off the ground ... and considering his wonderful work on the live action / animated hybrid of Enchanted, he's a natural fit.

The original Limpet takes place during WWII, and centers on a fish-loving fellow (played by Don Knotts, King of '60s Children Cinema) that is belitted by his wife, and rejected by the armed forces. »

Enchanted Director Remaking The Incredible Mr. Limpet

12 June 2009 10:16 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Incredible Mr. Limpet is one of those thoroughly 60s movies that, like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks, treats the combination of live-action and animation as the kind of revolutionary technology that no audience could see enough of. Then again, it's really just the birthplace of modern CGI, so maybe they weren't so wrong after all. It's hard to imagine recasting anyone in a role originated by Don Knotts, but Enchanted</I. director is giving it a shot, taking the directorial reins on Warner Bros. remake of the 1964 film. THR reports that the film will also blend live action and animation, a familiar task for the guy who turned Amy Adams into an animation princess. I'd love it if they stuck with the old-school animation seen at the beginning of Enchanted, but the article seems to suggest the animation will be more along the lines of Alvin and »

‘Enchanted’ Director Kevin Lima to Remake ‘Mr. Limpet’

12 June 2009 12:05 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

In the original The Incredible Mr. Limpet, Don Knotts played a character that was completely lame until he turned into a fish and helped out our fighting men during WWII. I can only assume that an updated version would involve a character that turns into a fish, goes to help our fighting forces in Afghanistan, and flips around until suffocating in the desert. Nevertheless, Kevin Lima (the man who brought us Enchanted and who will forthcomingly bring us Candyland) has signed on to direct a remake of the 1964 flick for Warners. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project will, like the original, be a blend of live-action and animation. Which could turn out to be pretty fantastic considering the advancements that have been made in CGI and in mattes. Of course, it would depend completely on which star would carry the project. So who do you pick? Jim Carrey? Steve Carrell? Sir Ben Kingsley »

Kevin Lima Remaking Don Knotts' The Incredible Mr. Limpet

11 June 2009 11:55 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Warner Brothers is remaking the 1964 family comedy classic The Incredible Mr. Limpet and has hired Enchanted director Kevin Lima to direct. The original film starred Don Knotts as Mr. Limpet, an ordinary man who one day turns into a talking fish. After his transformation, he becomes a hero by helping spot and thwart enemy warships for the Allies during WWII. The original was a live-action-animation hybrid; the remake will also be a hybrid. This update has gone through several iterations, with Robin Williams and Jim Carrey among the actors once under consideration and even Mike Judge at one point attached to direct. Hollywood has become somewhat obsessed with these "hybrid" movies, mainly because the first Alvin & the Chipmunks was so successful ($217 million). Additionally, Kevin Lima has become the go-to guy for cheerful family comedies ever since Enchanted was a huge a hit. Besides The Incredible Mr. Limpet, Lima »

Kevin Lima Attached To Limpet Remake

11 June 2009 10:24 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Kevin Lima has become the latest director to attach himself like a limpet to the Warner Bros. remake of, well, The Incredible Mr. Limpet. The remake of the 1964 Don Knotts live-action/animation comedy, about an ordinary guy who transforms into a fish-man and helps the Allies out during World War II, has been in development for so long that Robin Williams was the first name attached, back when he was in his Flubber phase. You know, when his movies actually made money.Since then, Jim Carrey’s also come and gone on the project, while Mike Judge was one of the many directors who took a look before eventually moving on. But now Enchanted director Lima will be bringing his experience of live-action and animation (he directed the likes of Tarzan for Disney) to bear.No writer is yet attached to the project, but Akiva Goldsman is one of the producers, »

11 June 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Lima will be directing Warner Bros.' update of The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

The film is about a man who becomes a talking fish.

The original from 1964 starred Don Knotts as the title character. He was a regular guy who, once he transforms, turns into a World War II hero that helps pick out enemy warships for the Allies.

That film was a live action-animated hybrid that was directed by both Arthur Lubin and Robert McKimson.

This new version will be "a live-animated blend."

Limpet finally swims?

11 June 2009 5:46 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Anyone with a pre-cable childhood will probably be familiar with The Incredible Mr. Limpet, which seemed to air almost every Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The half-animated 1964 movie starred the rubber-faced Don Knotts as a guy who gets transformed into a cartoon fish and assists the Allies in WWII. A remake has been in the works for ages, with spastic actors Jim Carrey and Robin Williams previously planning to get in touch with their animated aquatic selves, but the movie never surfaced. »
