Notes on the honorary Oscar recipients, part two:
It wasn't a surprise when the Academy's board of governors awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to John Calley -- although, if you just look at his credits as a producer, it might seem odd that he was considered such a shoo-in for an award designed to honor a creative producer's body of work.
Over his 50 years in the movie business, Calley's career as a producer came in several distinct phases. In the 1960s, he served as producer or associate producer on about 10 films, including “The Americanization of Emily,&r... »

In 1964's The Americanization of Emily, James Garner plays Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Madison, a "dog robber" serving under a Navy general. His job is to procure whatever his boss needs, be it booze, food, cigarettes, or female companionship, and he's very good at what he does. A proud coward, Madison's figured out that the best way to avoid being killed in a war is to stay as far away from the fighting as possible. Until, that is, he ends up at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion as part of a PR stunt, and ends up an inadvertent hero.
Written by Paddy Chayevsky (Network, Altered States) and directed by Arthur Hiller, the story focuses on Charlie's love affair with a London war widow (Julie Andrews) who's lost her husband, brother and father in the war and finds Charlie's avowed cowardice encouraging -- she can't bear the thought of losing another loved one, »

Bland on the run
Emily St. John Mandel’s slim debut, an elegy for a broken relationship, leaves a greater impression in memory than it makes in reading. Lilia is a chronic runaway, constantly on the road since she was seven, leaving behind a trail of memories and broken hearts in each temporary home. Eli is Lilia’s latest casualty, a nice boy who follows her trail from New York to Montreal. Also in pursuit is Christopher, an obsessed private investigator who leaves behind his own daughter. As the title implies, the novel dwells in the past. It’s a road novel through time, its morose protagonists sketched in spare, impressionistic prose. The atmosphere is better than the characterization. Mandel has an impressive command of the language of longing, but the lovers themselves feel more like rough drafts than human beings. Still, the pages fly, and the final period leaves a palpable sense of loss. »

I watched Morgan Stewart’s Coming Home a scant three days after I saw Adventureland, and I could not help but be struck by the similarities between the two. Both were aimed squarely at the teenagers of their times, both aim for some degree of profundity (though this means something really different to each set of filmmakers) and both feature a budding romance between a geeky young man and a free-spirited young woman. I was as surprised as anyone to find that I liked Stewart a whole hell of a lot more.
Jon Cryer, the man who spent the better part of his popularity trying to recreate the success of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (a film that he did not appear in), portrays Morgan Stewart, a young hellion who (according to the back of the box) has been kicked out of 10 prep schools in the past seven years. After his latest incident, »
