Minelli in Rome, 5 March 2002
Author: neguinho from NYC, NY

This is a sadly overlooked movie, vintage Minelli and a classic of the genre. No one used color like Vincent Minelli and here with Rome and Cinecitta as a backdrop, the film is truly gorgeous- every bit as beautiful for instance as Godard's Le Mepris and no less preposterous and engaging. Kirk Douglas gives a terrific performance as the director recovering from a nervous breakdown and possibly on the verge of another, while trying to shoot his comeback picture in the Eternal City. A sister to the Bad and the Beautiful, it is Hollywood melodrama at it's best. Now, just try and see it - it is available neither on VHS or DVD, is rarely if ever run on television and has not been seen in revival houses since the late seventies.
