This Week on Stage: 'The Understudy,' 'Idiot Savant,' and 'Nightingale'

7 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the »

Bono’s troubled Broadway musical 'Spider-Man' has been saved! (IrishCentral)

6 November 2009 12:30 PM, PST | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Spider-Man’s been saved! That's the word from an inside source on the troubled Broadway musical which features music from Bono and The Edge. “Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark” was originally set to preview at the Hilton Theater on February 25, 2010 and open in March, but production was stalled for nearly a month by financial difficulties. The show’s budget is reported to have soared to $52 million, in part because of theater renovations, and will cost about $1 million per week to produce, which is hundreds of thousands of dollars more than other elaborate Broadway shows such as “West Side Story.” However, our sources tell us that producers have met with Tony winning director Julie Taymor and other members of the creative team, and a deal has been reached to cover the estimated $24 million in budget overrun. “Spider-Man’s” opening date is expected to put pushed back to spring 2010. This week on stage: 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' and 'Finian's Rainbow'

30 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions, both revivals: The Neil Simon Plays: Brighton Beach Memoirs, a comedy-drama starring former Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf (left), which I described as "a fine revival, easily the best show of a young Broadway season," and the musical Finian's Rainbow, which Tanner Stransky called "an odd, farcical muscial" that is "well cast and smartly performed." Carrie: The Musical Returns to Broadway

29 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

"They're all gonna laugh at you!" Someone should have told that to the original producers of the '80s Broadway dud Carrie: The Musical . It would've spared them some pain. Alas, the show went on and after only five performances it fell harder than a bucket of pig's blood. When I worked in Manhattan, a recording of one performance landed in my lap. While interesting, none of it worked. Over two decades later, six figures are being pumped into a revitalized Carrie: The Musical . Behind this endeavor are Jeffrey Seller and Kevin McCollum (of Rent , Avenue Q , West Side Story ). Why the fascination to try and tell Stephen King's '74 tome as a musical is beyond me. What - is no one interested in bringing Maximum Overdrive to the stage? I'd see that. For... »

Audience Participation: Madonna Opens Her Catalog to "Glee", But Who Should Sing What?

23 October 2009 12:41 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

The Queen of Pop invades high school.Hide the children!

So the latest news to leak out of Entertainment Weekly’s upcoming Glee issue is that Madonna has granted Ryan Murphy’s baby full rights to use anything in her catalog for the show. And that the show plans on producing a full blown Madge episode.

I’ll wait for a minute while some of you finish squealing. Done? Because the rest of the class wants to hear the rest of the story, and I figure you do, too.

So we were just looking at the Material Girl’s catalog, and it includes a huge amount of content from over the years. There’s a sound for just about everyone, and the topics range from sex (Erotica) to politics (American Life). So we got to thinking about what song would be perfect for what character to sing in the all-Madonna episode. »

This Week on Stage: 'Memphis,' 'After Miss Julie,' and EW's complete theater guide

23 October 2009 2:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions: Memphis, an original musical from the creators of The Toxic Avenger Musical, and After Miss Julie, an adaptation of August Strindberg's Miss Julie starring Jonny Lee Miller and Sienna Miller (left). EW's Clark Collis calls Memphis "a mixed bag" and gives it a C+, while Jeff Labrecque gives After Miss Julie a C and remarks that "the actors' chemistry is surprisingly stagnant." South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut Blu-ray Review

22 October 2009 8:16 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

South Park is now an institution. Something to take for granted. The show struggled early on after it became a breakout sensation, but now it’s there, always there. You know what Trey Parker and Matt Stone are going to do to a certain extent. Their comic rhythms are familiar, and they know how to tell a joke. The fun in revisiting the movie is that Trey Parker obviously loves musicals, and he made one with his film. My review of South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut after the jump.

The film concerns the four boys, Kyle, Stan, Cartman and Kenny as they get to see the Terrence and Phillip movie “Asses of Fire.” In it, the Canadian duo swear like sailors, with the hit single “Uncle Fucker.” Seeing the movie leads Cartman to challenge Kenny to light his farts on fire, and the act of doing so kills Kenny. »

Villains We Love: Leland Palmer

18 October 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Pretty much everything about the world of Twin Peaks is magic. The stable of actors is amazing -- from the wonders of Jack Nance to the still chills of Sheryl Lee's smile, to the quirky post-West Side Story Richard Beymer and Russ Tamblyn. Angelo Badalamenti's score remains one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. David Lynch and Mark Frost made for a perfect mixture of continuity and insanity, while always knowing just how gently to pull at the strings of tension and chill the nerves.

But my true and refined appreciation rests with Ray Wise. One of my favorite severely underrated actors, Wise's performance in both the series and film is stunning. He's one of the rare actors who can pull off the most scary and convincing moments of sadisticness just as easily as the charming moments steeped in sweetness and charisma. »

Stage Door: Geniuses of the American Musical Theatre, Linda Eder

8 October 2009 7:43 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The Broadway musical is an American invention. Geniuses of the American Musical Theatre, just out from Applause Theater & Cinema Books, profiles 28 artists who helped transform its toe-tapping zip into legendary status. Musicals like "West Side Story," "Guys & Dolls" and "Gypsy" are iconic and enduring; many creators are equally famous. Leonard Bernstein, Rogers & Hammerstein and George Gershwin are household names. Others, like Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, who wrote the music and lyrics for "The Wizard of Oz," also demand our attention. True, genius is a heady word, but to author Herbert Keyser, it's deserved. Musicals, can produce songs and characters that captivate each generation anew. "Let's Fall in Love," "Send In The Clowns" and "Mack the Knife" are classic songs in the theatrical pantheon - and standards at nightclubs worldwide. The trick here is the anthology... »

The best films of the first week of the fest include a spectacular coming-of-age story, an intense drama, a fascinating documentary, and a Russian musical. The lineup at this year’s fest may be a little light on true gems that instantly jump out from the printed schedule, but it just means you’ll have to dig a little harder. The Week in Film: "Whip It" good, "Lying" bad and cool new trailers

2 October 2009 8:08 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Reading about the health care reform battle has gotten depressing — except for that awesome Florida congressman who basically told the Republicans to cram it with walnuts when they demanded he apologize for saying the crux of the Gop health plan was "die quickly" — so let’s talk about movies for a bit.

Drew Barrymore makes a crowd-pleasing debut as a director with Whip It, an entertaining saga about a mousy teen (Juno’s Ellen Page) in small-town Texas who blossoms when she lies about her age and joins an Austin roller derby team.

In a year that's given us such awful movies like The Ugly Truth and All About Steve, finally here’s a chick flick that doesn’t seem to hate chicks.

The socko supporting cast includes Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, Alia Sawkat (Arrested Development), Zoë Bell, Eve and Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden.

Glee recap (1.04): "Preggers"

24 September 2009 7:38 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

I guess I wasn't so rusty after all, because I'm back with another recap — this time for my favorite new show this fall: Glee. The fourth episode starts off with Kurt, Brittany, and Tina reenacting Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video. I hope you're not as sick of this song as I am because we're going to be hearing it a lot throughout this episode.

Still, I have to admit that Chris Colfer sounds so amazing on this song I thought it was actually B singing at first.

Halfway through the number, Kanye West interrupts to say that his version was good but Beyonce's was the best version ever. Not really. It's actually Kurt's dad, played by Mike O'Malley of Yes Dear fame. Some of the best lines in this show are the more subtle ones. Like when Kurt exclaims that his dad is home early, and dad replies, "Deadliest Catch is on. »

Mini Recap – Glee 1.4 "Preggers"

23 September 2009 8:05 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Kurt recreates Beyonce’s single ladies video, complete with unitard and backup dancers, only to be caught by his homophobic father.  In an attempt to cover, he lies that he’s the new kicker on the football team.  Kurt’s father is more than willing to believe that a sequined unitard is the new jock-chic, and shows pride for his boy, likely for the first time since he hit puberty.  Looks like Kurt might have to put more into this charade than he planned.  He does indeed show up to football practice, with an assist by Finn.  Kurt, with enviable confidence, shakes his booty to Beyonce and boots the ball straight between the posts.  He gets the job.  Kurt and Finn even convince the football team to use dance to learn to loosen up and work as a team…which results in an on field Beyonce dance fest in full »

Sundance Channel's "Brick City" Gives Hope For City And Reality TV

21 September 2009 6:54 AM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Tonight, Sundance Channel premieres "Brick City," the reality docu-drama about New Jersey's largest city in transition and the very real people at the forefront of that change. Among them are Oprah-endorsed mayor Cory Booker, who previously starred in his own documentary, "Street Fight." Four years later, his street fighting is again at the forefront, while he joins police, politicIans, and the people in stopping crime on his New Jersey streets.

Director Marc Levin said the gangs who still inhabit New Jersey actually gave him and his partner, Mark Benjamin, the idea for the gripping series, which doubled in scope from a few 30-minute episodes to five 1-hour documentaries, airing each night this week.

"A number of young gang members reached out to my partner Mark Benjamin first and they asked if he could call me. I was a little apprehensive but I spoke to them and they were looking to »

Obituary: Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze was born in Houston, Texas in 1952 to parents Patsy, a choreographer, and Jesse, an engineering drafter. His mother would prove to be a big influence on his career and life. It was at her Houston dance school that he showed a skill for performing and met fellow student Lisa Niemi. They married in June 1975 and remained together until his death. In 1972 he completed his dance training in New York at the Harkness and Joffrey Ballet schools. His first professional job came when he was cast as Prince Charming in touring ice show Disney On Parade. When a recurrence of a high school knee injury sidelined his dancing career, Swayze moved into acting, landing Broadway roles in Goodtime Charley, West Side Story and as Danny Zucko in Grease.
