Interesting Story Lacks One Thing: A Heart, 18 April 2005

This documentary-like movie revolves around people trying to survive during Sicily's fight for independence in the late 1940s. The title of the film is deceiving because this is not really a biography of Giuliano, the real-life separatist "soldier" who quickly turned into one of the most wanted criminals in Sicily's history. Sadly, this historical figure is a mere prop used here by director Rosi in order to explore the political and social atmosphere of a specific time in Italian history. The movie is definitely well shot, but director Rossi is so concerned with creating good-looking images, that he forgets to give audiences something to identify with. In any event, the film's style is too ordinary and does not allow for any kind of emotional involvement. When I watch a movie, I like to be an active participant, and while I admired many things about this film, I felt director never invited me to be part of the experience. I think the 1960s movie "Battle of Algiers" covers similar ground in a more effective manner. I cannot recommend this movie.
