Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Ruby Dee, Diana Sands, Ivan Dixon, Louis Gossett Jr. and John Fiedler recreated their stage roles in the movie version. A 1960 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play nomination went to Claudia McNeil.
