North By Northwest Blu-ray Review

7 November 2009 10:02 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Going back to the old masters, going back to the classics is always illuminating. Someone like Alfred Hitchcock knew how to frame a film. He knew where he was putting his camera, and why it was there. As in North by Northwest he achieved one of the great visual representations of sex. Cary Grant lifts Eva Marie Saint up to bed, and then a train enters a tunnel. Not exactly subtle, but undeniably brilliant. My review after the jump.

North by Northwest is one of Hitchcock’s most pleasurable films. In his cycle of “wrong man on the run” films, which includes The 39 Steps and Foreign Correspondent, North by Northwest has one advantage over those others films: It stars Cary Grant. And Grant’s dapper persona adds a level of debonair to whatever he did. Here he stars as Roger Thornhill, who’s mistaken for secret agent George Kaplan. He »

28 October 2009 1:36 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Along with the new UK quad poster for The Box revealed earlier today, we've been following along with director Richard Kelly's week-long guest blog over at MTV. Today he discusses the music for the film composed and performed by Arcade Fire and provides a new clip.

Here's an excerpt from Richard Kelly's MTV Guest Blog:

On the night of September 20, 2007 - my producing partner Sean McKittrick and I went to see the now legendary Arcade Fire show at the Hollywood Bowl ... I considered them to be one of the most promising rock bands on the planet. After the show I was introduced to Win Butler [and] nervously tried to pitch him the story for "The Box", then handed him a copy of the script along with a CD of Bernard Herrmann's score for "Vertigo" as inspiration.

I didn't expect to hear back for awhile, but sure enough -- »

He then watched every Hitchcock film and branched off to other classic suspense films, later discovering Swedish films and, his personal favorite, horror. At the age of 15, Eric knew that his future was destined to be film related. He attended Dawson College and studied Cinema and Communications under the impression that he was going to become a successful film producer. Clare Nina Norelli is a writer/musician/composer who lives in Perth, Western Australia. At age 8, she began learning classical piano and enrolled to study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Waapa) in 2004. She soon realised that the regiments of classical music performance were no longer for her (she jazzed up Beethoven a bit too much) and changed her major to Composition in 2005. In 2006 Clare wrote the music for the short film Gusto and her work was nominated for the award for original music composition in the 2007 West Australian Screen Awards. In 2007 she presented a paper at the Totally Huge New Music Festival on Angelo Badalamenti`s film and TV music for David Lynch entitled, Suburban Dread. She continued her film music research in 2008 writing her Musicology dissertation on Bernard Herrmann`s scores for Citizen Kane, Vertigo and Taxi Driver. 'Project Runway' and film noir: What are your favorite femme-fatale fashions?

25 September 2009 1:24 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Last night, Project Runway went Hollywood: the designers had to create a look based on classic Hollywood genres, one of which was film noir. Althea, Louise, and Irina all picked this über cool category, and I had high hopes that the ladies would crank out some fierce femme fatale frocks. Wrong! Louise failed miserably (a 1940s actress going to a party dressed as a flapper...huh?), while Irina merely squeaked by with a too-revealing gown paired with an out-of-place poufy cape. Only Althea (whose design is pictured, left) came close to capturing the sexy, dangerous allure of screen goddesses like Barbara Stanwyck (far left) and Rita Hayworth. She even got the hair right. The challenge got me thinking about the rich history of film noir heroines and the drop-dead duds that made them so thrillingly naughty. It's hard to top Stanwyck's shoulder-padded blouses and pencil skirts — not to mention that ankle bracelet! »

10 Awesome Foreign Actresses in Movies You Must See!

25 September 2009 6:29 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

They're young, beautiful and talented, but some of them maybe quite unfamiliar to some of you. In our latest List of 10, tMF compilled 10 Foreign (if you like, Non-American) actresses and the must-see movies that made them 'hot properties' locally. Some of them joined Hollywood already - but have you seen them at their Best?

- - -

- - - It's a pity many of the roles given to them in Hollywood are not what you can call 'prestige' roles. Most of them are given the usual run-of-the-mill characters. Why not take a good look at their previous works and find out why we think they're awesome!

- - -

# 10 - Maria Valverde (Spain) - Maria Valverde was born in Madrid and says she always wanted to become an actress. She finally fulfilled her dream at the age of 16 with a leading role in Manuel Martín Cuenca movie, La flaqueza del bolchevique. »

Tiff #3: Some of the films I've seen

11 September 2009 7:28 PM, PDT | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

I have a quirky policy about writing of films from a film festival. In the early years, I tried to avoid an actual "review," especially negative, because I believed a film deserved a chance to open before I laid into it. This was grandiose--as if the world was awaiting my opinion. Then I began suggesting my thinking, without going into detail. Then, being human, I allowed that approach to enlarge into specific descriptions of films I really loved, or hated.

Alex Vo, editor of Rotten Tomatoes: No Meter when he needs it most.

That's now the strategy I use, with amendments. I can only review a film for the first time once, and if I've used all my energy in rehearsal, what have I saved for opening night? I'll reflect the general reception of certain films, however, if only in the spirit of providing news coverage. The first year I was here, »

That's right! The kind folks over at Overture have given us the poster premiere for Michael Moore's new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story, opening October 2nd. I wonder if that was intentional?! So, what do you think? Are you looking forward to Moore's next doc? Leave it to him to make even the global financial crisis entertaining!
