Touch of Evil is loosely based on the novel Badge of Evil (1956), written by "Whit Masterson", a pseudonym for authors Robert Wade and William Miller.
Check out Great Guy (1936), in which James Cagney plays the head of the Bureau of Weights and Measures in NYC. His character goes up against crooked politicians, the criminal underground, a prominent philanthropist, and grocers who add a few ounces to their packages in order to cheat the public. Other films that fans of Touch of Evil may enjoy include: The Third Man (1949) with Orson Wells, L.A. Confidential (1997) with crooked cops, twists, and turns, and Citizen Kane (1941), directed by Orson Welles. Other films directed by Welles include Vérités et mensonges (aka F for Fake) (1974), Mr. Arkadin (1955), and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942). Also of interest might be such Noir and Neo-Noir films as Green for Danger (1946), The Big Sleep (1946), The Maltese Falcon (1941), and Insomnia (1997).
