Ak 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa (Criterion Collection)
Sure, there are some of 2009's bigger film releases hitting DVD and Blu-ray this week, but this set from Criterion is undoubtedly the release of the week. This set offers 25 of Akira Kurosawa's films, four of which had never been released on DVD, and an illustrated book featuring an introduction and notes on each of the films by Stephen Prince (The Warrior's Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa) and a remembrance by Donald Richie (The Films of Akira Kurosawa).
I was not sent a copy for review, but DVD Beaver has an extensive three page look at the set right here. If you are interested, it is selling for $284.99 at Amazon as of the posting of this round-up. A list of the films included is directly below followed by a

We often bash the neverending flurry of remakes, and frankly, it's hard not to. Nestled in between the possible gems are many projects that wrench the magic out of the original they're supposed to love. But luckily (especially in this remake-laden movie world) they're not all bad. In fact, sometimes they can be downright delightful, thought-provoking, or even awe-inspiring.
One of the top contenders, of course, is The Fly. The 1958 version was wildly popular and loved, yet David Cronenberg was able to sweep in and concoct a film that people rave about to this day. It remains one of the only movies able to rip through my adoration of the original and find a secure spot on the appreciation shelf. Beyond that, there are further remake chills with memorable projects like Dawn of the Dead and Cape Fear, plus a bunch of more mainstream-friendly, and beloved, remakes. Ocean's 11, anyone?

The next few month could become pretty expensive for hardcore fans of Akira Kurosawa. After Toho already announced the first Masterworks Blu-ray Disc Collections with seven films from Japans most well known director back in June, the studio will offer seconds in Dezember. Akira Kurosawa: The Masterworks Blu-ray Disc Collection II will be released on December 18th and will include Yojimbo, Ikiru, Stray Dog (Nora inu), I Live in Fear (Ikimono no kiroku), The Hidden Fortress, The Lower Depths (Donzoko) and Most Beautifully (Ichiban utsukushiku). Like with the first collections, the titles will most probably be available outside the box set as well.
Oh, and just in case you are wondering…of course Toho won’t include English subtitles.

Maybe there’s a reason George Lucas sent his Death Star to take out the Enterprise after all. Stumbled across this video over at CollegeHumor.com, which not-so-subtly makes the case that J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek” is little more than a carbon copy of George Lucas’ original “Star Wars”, complete with disgruntled farm boy. You know, before he got moronic and introduced us to greedy aliens and Jar Jar Binks?
You can certainly make the case that the plot of “Star Wars” itself wasn’t exactly original, as most of the original trilogy was lifted from Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress”. And really, hasn’t the farm boy makes good plot been done in a lot of movies before “Star Wars”, and repeated since?

Wow, what a horrible week for DVD and Blu-ray releases. Sure, some people will be interested in picking up The Reader after it was nominated for Best Picture, beating out poor ol' Dark Knight. I had it at #10 on my Best of 2008 list and I would love to own a Blu-ray version for reasons I will soon tell you, but I think that is a film I will remain in the minority and I would never recommend anyone pick it up on a blind buy. So what does that leave you with? The Spirit? I know a few people will probably be interested in the Blu-ray edition of Pride and Prejudice and the other half might think about buying 8 Mile on Blu-ray, but all-in-all there is really nothing to suggest here.
So, while you can still read my mini-capsules
