Free Flick of the Day: House on Haunted Hill

28 October 2009 6:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There's only a few days left until Halloween, and your supply of DVDs might be running a little low. But SlashControl has a few classic horror films up to entertain you on these final, spooky nights, like the original House on Haunted Hill. If all you've ever seen is the 1999 remake, then you owe it to yourself to spend a night with some old school horror.

Modern viewers won't find Haunted Hill very scary, although I challenge you to watch the opening in the dark, alone, while wearing a pair of headphones. If you don't find the screams and moans a little unsettling in your isolated state, you have nerves of steel. I commend you!

But the fun of this classic isn't in its scares (which are few even for 1959 standards), it's all in Vincent Price's performance. The sadistic, spiky interaction between him and his beautiful wife Annabelle remains »

Scenes We Love: The Others

19 October 2009 5:48 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There's just not enough ghost movies made these days, and certainly not enough good ones. Few filmmakers opt for Gothic manors, fog, and squeaky doors over the flashy "ghost" splatter-fests on display in The House on Haunted Hill and the 13 Ghosts remakes. I'm not sure why more directors don't opt to play in the spirit world, as I think movies like The Changeling, Paranormal Activity, and even The Blair Witch Project show that audiences can be scared with very little. As Jaws famously proved, it's what you don't see that's frightening, especially when you're dealing with the world of the living and the dead.

I think Alejandro Amenabar's The Others is one of the finest "haunted house" movies ever made. I watched it again last night, and I'm surprised at how little actually happens in this movie. When I first saw it in the theater, it seemed to be a symphony of voices, »

Alone in the Dark: The Vortex Theater’s Haunted House

11 October 2009 12:54 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Remember those good ol’ fashioned haunted house picture shows from the 1950’s such as William Castle’s original House On Haunted Hill starring Vincent Price? The characters go to this spooky old house, spend the night, hope to survive the alleged spectral inhabitants, and, all the while, help Price deal with his sorted marital affairs. Well the new Haunted House experience held at Manhattan’s own Vortex Theater is nothing like that at all. Rather, it’s a great deal more interesting.

The Vortex Theater, located at 164 Eleventh Avenue and known for its stage performances which have included Agamemnon, H.M.S. Pinafore, and Kiss Of The Spider Woman to name a few, has most recently put together its latest  event, titled with basic elegance, Haunted House, just in time for Halloween.

Headed by Producing Artistic Director Joshua Randall, as well as the people who brought the former thrill A Midsummer Nightmare to The Vortex Theater, »
