Strange Trailer for Zhang's 'Blood Simple' Remake

19 November 2009 4:17 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There was a lot of outrage when it was announced that there would be a remake of Blood Simple, the breakthrough film from the Coen Brothers, even though the new version was being directed by Zhang Yimou, who is at least on the same level as the Coens, if not a better director.

I cautioned the naysayers - as I always do with movies that are transported to different cultures - that you really have no idea what that kind of remake will be like. Take Kurosawa's Macbeth adaptation, Throne of Blood or the master's Ran, an appropriation of King Lear (he's now in the Shakespeare Hall of Fame, incidentally). A good story is a good story, and if you're careful enough or inventive enough in the re-telling, there's no issue with trying to breathe new life into it.

As you will see from the first trailer for Zhang's film, »

New 'Hamlet' to Get the Horror Treatment, Star Emile Hirsch

27 August 2009 8:55 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Now here‘s an interesting concept: "Hamlet" as a horror movie.

Throne of Blood, Akira Kurosawa’s version of "Macbeth", has some genuinely spooky moments, but I cannot recall any movies based on Hamlet getting the same treatment. Even when the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears, it tends to be done in a stately manner, which would seem at odds to the fact that it’s the dead come back to life.

So I am not as quick to dismiss news that Catherine Hardwicke will be helming the umpteenth version of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, only aimed at a younger crowd and emphasizing the supernatural elements. Emile Hirsch will be starring as the tormented titular character, and in an interview with Collider for Taking Woodstock, compared it to a certain horror movie classic. More importantly, he confirmed that it will be done in the original verse.

Are You Ready for a 3-D Version of "Hamlet?" It's Also a Musical!

13 August 2009 10:51 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

A 3-D musical version of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is being planned by Elsinore Films.

The movie will be the first of six adaptations of Shakespeare's plays based on musical version by U.K. theater company Shakespeare 4 Kidz (is that the medieval spelling of kids?).

The other five films in the series are "Macbeth," "Romeo and Juliet," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Twelfth Night" and "The Tempest."

British playwright John Godber is set to direct.

The first three films in the series will be produced back to back over 18 months.

As far as "Hamlet" is concerned, the producers want to include a ghost that hovers in front of your eyes, cannon fire that flies into the auditorium, and a sword fight with multiple angle views.

Hhhmmmmm, the best 3-D movies are the ones with less gimmicks, just keep that in mind :happy »

Shakespeare Gets 3-D Treatment

13 August 2009 2:46 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Elsinore Films is planning a series of six William Shakespeare movie adaptations — in 3-D. The movies will be based on the hit musicals created by Shakespeare 4 Kidz, the British company that attempts to make the playwright's archaic language palatable for children. Hamlet is due first, with Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, and The Tempest to follow.

In a statement released on its website, Shakespeare 4 Kidz hyped up the idea of using modern cinematic techinque to add new dimensions to the Bard's work.

Not only will the story of Hamlet be told in a unique and exciting way, but the addition of the latest 3D technology brings added excitement to cinema audiences: a ghost that hovers in front of your eyes, cannon-fire that flies into the auditorium, and a final sword-fight that seems to literally be all around you, are just some of the features promised in the first film, »

Hamlet 3D: The Musical Hopes to Capture Teen Audience

I know what you are thinking. High School Musical and all of its sequels were great. But it would have been a lot better with Shakespearian dialogue. Well, guess what? According to Variety, Elsinore Films producer Mark Thomas is gearing up to make Hamlet 3D: The Musical, as inspired by both High School Musical and Harry Potter. This new adaptation of William Shakespeare's famous play will be aimed at teenagers, and will be the first in a series of six films.

Wait... What? Anthony Head's in a Futuristic 'Macbeth'??

2 June 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Okay... Did you know that there's another Macbeth movie in the works, one other than Terrence Howard's modernized version in the Caribbean? And that it is taking an even more surprising spin on William Shakespeare's classic? And it stars the most excellent Anthony Stewart Head of Buffy and Repo fame (as Duncan, not Macbeth)?

Apparently this project has been in the works for eons (here's news about it in 2006, with no mention of the futuristic angle). But as excellent as it sounds to have Head play Duncan as "a spitting, cigar-chomping criminal leader, with a soft Glaswegian accent that can turn in an instant from warm and affectionate to fatally menacing," the pic is in trouble. Sure, that's obvious from the fact that it's been three years and nothing, but that's not all.

SciFi Wire reports that reshoots are needed, and Head doesn't seem to keen to continue. »

Photo: Only Authentic Image of William Shakespeare Discovered

11 March 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Professor Stanley Wells, chairman of the trust and one of the world's leading experts on Shakespearian studies, unveiled the only authentic image of William Shakespeare that has remained for centuries in the possession of the Cobbes family. The portrait is reportedly the only surviving one painted while the writer was still alive, in about 1610, when Shakespeare was 46 years old. So what does this have to do with movies? Shakespeare is the writer of the following works that were turned into movies: "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet," "Macbeth, "The Merchant of Venice," "Othello" and many others. Up to now, only two images have been accepted as authentic representations of what Shakespeare may have looked like. One is the engraving by Martin Droeshout published in the First Folio of 1623. The other is the portrait bust in Holy Trinity Church. Both are posthumous: Shakespeare died in 1616. Painting: (click to enlarge) »

Plays Saturday, March 7; Friday, March 13, 2pm on Saturday, March 14 An anatomy of the relationship between ambition and corruption, MacBeth is one of Shakespeare's most bloody and fear-filled tragedies. Based loosely on the historical account of King Macbeth of Scotland many superstitions are centered on the belief the play is "cursed", referring to it instead as "The Scottish play". »
