This film tries very hard to show us how the military rewards those who do not deserve it (both with commands and medals) simply because they follow the book and through length of service. While this is not something which I doubt, I feel the film is hurt by unnecessary time spent with the love triangle between Jurgens, Burton and Jurgens wife. In addition, the performances of Burton and Jurgens leave a lot to be desired. Finally, the film's message has been delivered more powerfully by many other films (The Bridge Over the River Kwai, for example). The only real stand out in the film is Christopher Lee as a no-nonsense seargent.
