Grace Kelly: To Catch A Thief, High Society, The Swan

24 November 2009 12:10 AM, PST | Alternative Film Guide | See recent Alternative Film Guide news »

Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra in High Society Turner Classic Movies‘ Grace Kelly series comes to a close with a screening of the actress’ last three films: Alfred Hitchcock’s comedy-adventure To Catch a Thief (1955), co-starring Cary Grant; Charles Walters‘ musical High Society (1956), a remake of The Philadelphia Story (1940) with Kelly as the woman between Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby; and Charles Vidor’s romantic drama The Swan (1956), in which Kelly has to make up her mind between plebeian Louis Jourdan or blue-blooded Alec Guinness. I wouldn’t call any of those three films a masterpiece, but both To Catch a Thief and The Swan have their own particular charms. In the former, Grace Kelly is at her most relaxed as [...] »

[TV] Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!: Season One, Vol. 3 - Hello Mummy

7 September 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Looking back on the summer of ’09, a summer of big-scale action blockbusters alternating with star-studded smaller pictures and a few scaled-down gems, it’s easy to forget that tent pole franchises have been around longer than most would care to admit. Scooby-Doo, for one, is still going strong, with a new show and a TV-movie prequel coming out this fall. A bit of research reveals that the series on this DVD, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, ran from 1969 to 1973, consisting of 25 episodes over the course of 2 seasons. Banking on nostalgia, this single volume presents four episodes of the first season, “The Backstage Rage”, “Bedlam in the Big Top”, “A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts”, and “Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too.”

Anyone familiar with the series and its many incarnations (including two feature-length films) will be no stranger to the wafer-thin plots each of the episodes has to offer. With the show just starting out, »

A Tiff Programmer Talks Sawasdee Bangkok

28 August 2009 8:01 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

[The Toronto International Film Festival’s south-east Asia programmer Raymond Phathanavirangoon has been giving us a guided tour of his selections for the big festival and today he checks in with some thoughts on Sawasdee Bangkok.]

Hi everyone! After my introduction of Pen-ek Ratanuruang’s Nymph, here’s another project at Tiff that the same director is involved in: Sawasdee Bangkok. Yes, like Paris je t’aime and New York I Love You, this is another city omnibus. But the big difference is that all the filmmakers here are Thai. They know their own city off by heart, and as such the four shorts here are much more intimate and insightful than the usual 5-minute-and-it’s-over clip. Plus, there’s a real charm to all the films, which only makes the title Sawasdee Bangkok all the more fitting.

The four filmmakers are some of the biggest names in current Thai cinema. Wisit Sasanatieng of Tears of the Black Tiger and Citizen Dog fame; Aditya Assarat, who took the cinema world by storm with his award-winning Wonderful Town; Kongdej Jaturanrasamee, acclaimed screenwriter and the director of the quirky Midnight, »

May Flowers, Princess Grace of Monaco

6 May 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

May Flowers, weeknights @ 11:00

Fifty-four years ago last month, way back in 1955, movie star Grace Kelly attended the Cannes Film Festival (pictured below) -- it was held in April in those days. She had just headlined two Alfred Hitchcock hits Rear Window and Dial M for Murder and just barely won the Oscar for Country Girl. To Catch a Thief was arriving later that summer. She was in short, as super as superstars get.

During this very trip to Cannes she met Prince Rainier of Monaco! How crazy must that year have been for her? The courtship was aggressive and they married the following April.

Their royal union made her even more famous but ended her film career. Kelly never made another motion picture (though two were released in 1956: The Swan and High Society) and Prince Rainier subsequently banned screening of her films (according to at least one website »
